Chapter 10 - TWO DAUGHTERS OF THE SAME LIE
The boardroom disappeared around me.
My father kept speaking, but the words arrived in pieces.
Maria Vale.
Two daughters.
A hidden adoption.
Evelyn had loved me as her own from the day she carried me out of a county hospital.
Arthur planned to tell me when I was older.
Then Evelyn died.
He could not bear to take another mother from me.
“So you lied for twenty years.”
“Yes.”
“Did Kendra know?”
“Daniel may have told Maria.”
Russell looked devastated.
He had believed Katherine was Daniel’s only child.
Maria had concealed my birth from everyone except Evelyn and Arthur.
Mara found a sealed adoption record confirming the truth.
Kendra was eighteen months older than me.
Her hatred was built around the belief that the Hartwells stole her family.
In one sense, they had.
In another, they saved me from the same world that shaped her.
Victor called from the hospital again.
This time I answered because he had new information.
Kendra once spoke in her sleep after drinking.
She repeated the name Maria and an address near Kenosha.
Federal agents searched the property.
They found an elderly woman living under another identity.
Maria Vale was alive.
She had spent decades hiding from Daniel’s associates.
Kendra believed her mother died when she was sixteen.
Maria had abandoned that identity to protect both daughters.
When investigators showed her my photograph, she began crying.
When they showed her Kendra’s, she asked only one question.
“What has Daniel made her do?”
Maria agreed to speak to Kendra.
We arranged a recorded call using Voss’s recovered network.
Kendra answered from a moving vehicle.
Her face appeared on the secure screen.
Then Maria entered the frame beside me.
“Katherine,” she said.
Kendra stopped breathing.
“Mom?”
“I am sorry.”
“You left me.”
“I tried to save you.”
“You gave her to them.”
Kendra looked at me with a hatred that now carried grief.
“She got the father.”
“The money.”
“The name.”
“And I got Daniel.”
Maria shook her head.
“You got the story he needed you to believe.”
She explained that Daniel kidnapped Kendra after Maria tried to expose him.
He raised her through intermediaries and fed her letters blaming Arthur.
Maria entered protection because Daniel threatened to kill both children.
Kendra’s face broke for one second.
Then Voss appeared behind her.
He shut off the call.
Mara traced the signal to Union Station.
Security cameras showed Voss carrying two cases toward a train.
Kendra followed.
Then she stopped, looked directly at a camera, and slipped a note beneath a bench.
Agents recovered it.
VOSS KILLED DANIEL.
HE PLANS TO RELEASE THE FILES AND BLAME BOTH SISTERS.
