Chapter 3 - THE PRESS CONFERENCE

By sunrise, every financial channel in Chicago carried Victor’s face.

He stood outside Meridian headquarters in a navy suit, with Kendra beside him and Eleanor behind them wearing pearls.

Victor looked wounded, dignified, and carefully betrayed.

“My wife deceived me for seven years,” he told the cameras.

“She entered my life under a false identity and secretly influenced my employer.”

A reporter asked about the frozen accounts.

Victor shook his head.

“This is punishment because I discovered financial misconduct inside Hartwell Group.”

Kendra placed a supportive hand on his arm.

Eleanor dabbed her dry eyes with a handkerchief.

I watched from my father’s private office.

“He rehearsed that,” I said.

“Three times,” Russell answered.

The security team had recovered audio from the penthouse after Victor ignored the eviction order.

Kendra coached him to say exploited instead of promoted.

Eleanor suggested he mention emotional abuse.

Victor asked whether television makeup would cover the scratch Kendra left during an argument.

They were not frightened.

They believed public opinion could force my father to settle.

Then Victor held up a folder.

“These documents prove Hartwell executives moved fifty million dollars into a private account controlled by Olivia.”

My father looked toward me.

“Do you recognize it?”

“Yes.”

It was an old acquisition trust established when I turned twenty-one.

Only three people had authority to access it.

My father.

Russell.

Me.

The transfer had my digital signature and retinal verification.

Someone had created nearly perfect biometric fraud.

The press conference ended with federal agents arriving at Hartwell Tower.

They carried a warrant.

A financial crimes prosecutor named Mara Chen entered the office and introduced herself.

“Miss Hartwell, until the transfer is explained, you cannot leave the state.”

My father stepped forward.

“She was assaulted last night.”

“I am aware.”

“Then investigate the man who assaulted her.”

“I am investigating everyone.”

I respected her immediately.

Mara examined my phone, my laptop, and the records Russell prepared.

She asked why I concealed my identity from my husband.

“Because I wanted a relationship that was not attached to my money.”

“And did you manipulate his career?”

“I prevented his early mistakes from destroying the company.”

“That is not a no.”

“No.”

My father’s head turned sharply.

I continued.

“I redirected contracts, introduced investors through intermediaries, and approved two emergency loans.”

Mara closed her notebook.

“Then Victor’s claim contains truth.”

“A piece of truth,” I said.

“The best lies always do.”

She ordered Meridian servers preserved.

At noon, Victor returned to the penthouse with a temporary court order claiming spousal occupancy rights.

He invited reporters inside.

Kendra wore my mother’s bracelet again.

Then building security found blood in the service elevator.

A trail led to the basement garage.

Simon Voss was discovered unconscious in Victor’s car.

In his pocket was a handwritten note.

OLIVIA HARTWELL ORDERED THE TRANSFER.
