Chapter 9 - THE WITNESS WHO LIED

Simon Voss looked healthy on the live feed.
No restraints.
No fear.
He stood beside Kendra while she connected the encryption key to an old terminal.
The injuries in Victor’s car had been real.
The kidnapping had been staged.
Voss wanted us to believe he was a victim so we would reveal what we knew.
My mother had trusted him.
That betrayal felt strangely personal.
Mara traced the feed to the Milwaukee property.
Federal agents surrounded the site.
Kendra contacted the Hartwell board directly.
Her image appeared across the conference screen.
“Good morning, Cousin Olivia.”
“What do you want?”
“Public confession.”
“Of what?”
“That Arthur Hartwell built his empire with blood.”
“I already released the North Harbor payments.”
“Not all of them.”
Voss placed a document before the camera.
It carried my father’s signature authorizing a payment to the security company that followed my mother.
Arthur stared at it.
“I signed that.”
The room went quiet.
He explained that he hired security after my mother received threats.
Daniel redirected the team and used the legitimate authorization as cover.
Kendra did not care about context.
She wanted an image the public would remember.
She threatened to release the forged package unless my father transferred controlling ownership of Hartwell Group to a trust in her name.
“You do not want justice,” I said.
“You want his chair.”
“I want what your family stole.”
“Your father stole from workers, poisoned land, bribed officials, and killed my mother.”
“Your uncle protected him.”
“Your father profited anyway.”
“Then prosecute us.”
Her smile sharpened.
“You know the law cannot return a childhood.”
“No.”
“But power cannot either.”
I ordered the board feed disconnected.
Then I gave Mara authorization to enter the vault.
Agents breached the lumberyard.
Kendra and Voss escaped through an old freight tunnel.
Inside the vault, police recovered my mother’s original journals.
The final entry described her plan to expose Daniel.
It also contained a sentence I did not expect.
Arthur knows Olivia is in danger.
He refuses to send her away.
If anything happens to me, he must tell her the truth about her birth.
I read it twice.
My father turned pale.
“What truth?” I asked.
He closed the office door.
“Evelyn was not your biological mother.”
The woman who raised me had adopted me privately after an infant trafficking investigation connected to North Harbor.
My biological mother had been a young Hartwell employee who disappeared after giving evidence against Daniel.
Her name was Maria Vale.
Kendra’s mother.
May you like
Kendra was not only Russell’s niece.
She was my half sister.
