Chapter 1 - THE NIGHT THE ACCOUNTS WENT DARK

By the time the black SUV reached Escalante Capital headquarters, it was almost two in the morning.

Mariana had not cried once.

Her cheek still burned.

The cut across her palm had soaked through the handkerchief the driver had given her.

But the pain felt strangely distant now.

For four years, she had spent every difficult night protecting Andrew from consequences.

Tonight, she was done protecting him.

The elevator opened directly onto the forty-eighth floor.

Her father, Rafael Escalante, was waiting inside the executive conference room.

At sixty-three, Rafael still carried the quiet authority that had made billionaires reconsider their words before speaking to him.

He looked at his daughter’s swollen cheek.

Then at her bandaged hand.

His expression changed.

“Did he do that?”

Mariana placed her purse on the table.

“Yes.”

Rafael’s jaw tightened.

“I told you four years ago that a man who needs you to become smaller will eventually punish you for refusing to disappear.”

Mariana looked toward the city lights.

“I thought he would change.”

“He changed.”

Rafael’s voice was cold.

“Just not in the direction you hoped.”

Around the table sat six attorneys, two financial officers, and the head of Escalante Capital’s private banking division.

Documents covered the polished surface.

The chief attorney, Evelyn Cross, slid a folder toward Mariana.

“Phase One is complete.”

Mariana opened it.

Every revolving credit line controlled by Escalante Capital had been suspended.

Every corporate guarantee connected to Andrew’s holding company had been placed under review.

Three investment accounts had been restricted pending a fraud audit.

And the mansion where Andrew had ordered Mariana to kneel was subject to a secured debt agreement held by one of Mariana’s trusts.

Andrew thought the house belonged to him.

Technically, he had never owned more than the illusion of it.

“How long before he notices?”

Mariana asked.

Evelyn checked her watch.

“His corporate cards will stop working immediately.”

“Payroll clears at six.”

“The bank will contact him at seven.”

“The board receives notice at eight.”

Rafael leaned back.

“And by nine, he will understand that the empire he bragged about tonight has creditors.”

Mariana closed the folder.

“No.”

Everyone looked at her.

“I don’t want to destroy the employees.”

“Freeze Andrew.”

“Freeze Brenda.”

“Freeze every transfer connected to Margaret.”

“But payroll stays untouched.”

Rafael studied her for a moment.

Even after everything, she was protecting innocent people.

That was exactly why he had trusted her with more power than Andrew had ever imagined.

At 2:17 a.m., Mariana signed the final authorization.

Across the city, Andrew was still drinking champagne with Brenda.

He had no idea that the first transaction had already failed.

Brenda tried to order a diamond bracelet online using the corporate card Andrew had given her.

DECLINED.

She frowned.

She tried again.

DECLINED.

Andrew laughed.

“Probably a security issue.”

Then his phone vibrated.

A message appeared from his private banker.

URGENT.

CALL ME IMMEDIATELY.

Andrew’s smile vanished.

And three floors above him, hidden inside the mansion’s security system, someone began deleting footage from the room where Margaret’s emerald necklace had disappeared.
