Chapter 13 - THE DEBT MARGARET HID

Margaret had been hiding the truth for fourteen years.
After Charles died, Andrew inherited the company.
He also inherited debt.
Far more than he knew.
Margaret feared Andrew would lose everything before he was thirty.
So she moved liabilities.
Reclassified loans.
Sold family assets secretly.
And borrowed against property held as security by Escalante-linked lenders.
At first, she told herself she was protecting her son.
Then she began protecting the lifestyle.
The mansion.
The cars.
The invitations.
The illusion that their family was still untouchable.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Andrew demanded.
“Because you were finally becoming someone.”
Margaret answered.
“I was already someone.”
“No.”
Her voice broke.
“You were a frightened young man trying to look like your father.”
Andrew recoiled.
Margaret continued.
“Mariana changed everything.”
“When she entered your life, lenders became patient.”
“Deals suddenly closed.”
“Investors returned.”
“I thought you had finally become the man your father wanted you to be.”
Andrew understood.
“It was her.”
Margaret looked away.
“Yes.”
For years, the success Andrew used to humiliate Mariana had been created by Mariana’s protection.
The realization should have humbled him.
Instead, it made him furious.
“She made me look like a fool.”
Margaret shook her head.
“You did that yourself.”
Andrew stared at his mother.
It was the first time she had ever spoken to him that way.
Across the city, Mariana met with prosecutors and financial investigators.
The evidence against Margaret involved falsified lending disclosures.
But Mariana noticed something strange.
Several questionable filings stopped exactly four years earlier.
Around the time Mariana married Andrew.
Margaret had ceased the worst manipulation once new financing arrived.
She had committed serious wrongdoing.
But she had not created the current fraud.
Andrew and Victor had.
Mariana refused to exaggerate Margaret’s role.
“Use the evidence.”
She told investigators.
“Not my anger.”
That evening, Andrew appeared unexpectedly at Mariana’s temporary apartment.
Security refused him entry.
He stood outside the lobby and called her.
“I need ten minutes.”
“No.”
“I have something you need.”
Mariana almost hung up.
Then Andrew said one name.
“Brenda.”
Mariana went silent.
“She didn’t act alone.”
“I already know you helped her.”
“No.”
Andrew looked up toward the building.
“I mean someone else.”
Mariana felt a chill.
“Who?”
Andrew lowered his voice.
“Your father.”
Mariana’s expression hardened.
“You’re lying.”
“Maybe.”
Andrew answered.
“But Brenda has an audio recording.”
“And if it’s real, Rafael knew she was stealing documents months ago.”
Mariana stared through the apartment window.

Andrew added one final sentence.
“Ask your father why he never stopped her.”
