Chapter 4 - THE PAPER SHE WAS SUPPOSED TO SIGN

Mariana watched the silent clip three times.

“Signs what?”

Rafael asked.

Mariana already knew where to begin looking.

For months, Andrew had pushed several documents across their breakfast table.

Insurance changes.

Corporate restructuring papers.

Property disclosures.

Routine signatures, he called them.

Mariana had refused to sign anything without reviewing it.

Andrew had become increasingly irritated.

Three days earlier, he had told her his attorneys needed one final signature before the quarterly board meeting.

She had delayed again.

Now she understood why last night had been planned.

Evelyn searched the digital files.

At 9:26 a.m., she found it.

A spousal consent agreement.

Twenty-seven pages.

Buried on page nineteen was language transferring Mariana’s marital voting rights and several trust-linked guarantees to an Andrew-controlled entity.

It would not have given him ownership of Escalante Capital.

But it would have allowed him to argue that Mariana had personally authorized control over assets securing his company.

Rafael’s expression darkened.

“He planned to use your marriage against the trust.”

Mariana nodded.

“And if I refused?”

Evelyn looked at the police report draft.

“He manufactures a theft accusation.”

“Threatens criminal charges.”

“Humiliates you.”

“Then offers to make everything disappear if you sign.”

Mariana closed her eyes.

That was why Andrew had ordered her to kneel.

It had never been merely about power.

It had been pressure.

A public breakdown.

A witness-filled accusation.

A frightened wife desperate to avoid arrest.

He expected her to sign anything by morning.

Instead, she had walked away.

At the mansion, Andrew was learning how badly the plan had failed.

His attorney, Peter Lang, threw the unsigned agreement onto the desk.

“She never signed.”

“I know that.”

Andrew paced.

“Can we enforce any part of it?”

“No.”

“What about marital property?”

Peter stared at him.

“You still don’t understand.”

He opened another document.

“The mansion is collateral.”

“So?”

“The senior secured lender is M.E. Heritage Trust.”

Andrew frowned.

“Who is M.E.?”

Peter pushed the ownership page toward him.

MARIANA ELENA ESCALANTE.

Andrew stopped moving.

Peter continued.

“The private aircraft is leased through another trust.”

“The investment portfolio is pledged.”

“Your majority stake in the company is subject to a voting proxy upon default.”

Andrew’s mouth went dry.

“How much does she control?”

Peter looked at him.

“Indirectly?”

He hesitated.

“Almost everything.”

Margaret suddenly entered.

Her face had gone pale.

Andrew turned on her.

“You knew her last name mattered.”

Margaret said nothing.

“You knew.”

Andrew stepped closer.

“What did you know about Mariana before I married her?”

May you like

Margaret finally looked at her son.

“Enough to know you were never supposed to make her leave.”
