Chapter 12 - A MOTHER’S STRIKE

Maya struck Daniel’s wrist with both hands.
The gun fired.
The shot slammed into the stone ceiling.
Dust rained over the children.
Federal agents surged into the chamber.
Daniel fought until three officers forced him to the ground.
Maya grabbed the keys from his belt.
She opened the gate and pulled Lucas and Emma into her arms.
The children clung to her.
“I’m sorry,” she repeated.
“You did nothing wrong,” Lucas cried.
The words broke everyone who heard them.
Children should never have to reassure their parents after being used as weapons.
Eleanor tried to flee through the western tunnel.
Nicole stepped aside as agents captured her.
Charles did not run.
He remained beside the table.
Even surrounded by federal officers, he looked calm.
“You have no idea what the ledger will cause,” he told me.
“Judges will fall.”
“Officials will be arrested.”
“Families will lose everything.”
“They made their choices.”
“Systems require compromise.”
“Kidnapping women is not compromise.”
“Sacrifice is necessary.”
I stared at him.
“You always mean someone else’s sacrifice.”
For the first time, anger cracked his composure.
“You would have had a comfortable life.”
“All you had to do was cooperate.”
“Cooperate with fraud?”
“With murder?”
“With my own erasure?”
“You married into this family.”
“No.”
“Your son married into my life.”
Charles looked toward the agents.
He understood that the distinction mattered.
I was not property they had acquired.
I was evidence that had survived.
Nicole stood near the tunnel entrance with one hand resting over her stomach.
Daniel looked at her from the floor.
“Tell them I never meant for this to happen.”
She stared at him.
“You searched my office while I slept.”
“I was protecting you.”
“You were using me.”
His eyes moved toward Maya.
Neither woman offered him comfort.
For the first time, Daniel faced both lives he had constructed.
Both had collapsed.
Agents searched the table.
They found passports under false names.
Cash in five currencies.
A satellite phone.
And a sealed envelope addressed to the governor.
Inside were photographs showing the governor meeting privately with Charles.
The blue ledger contained payments linked to those meetings.
The investigation had reached the highest levels of the state.
Detective Ruiz received an urgent call.
A federal judge had just blocked access to several Caldwell accounts.
Another judge had ordered all seized documents returned to the family.
Both orders had been issued within six minutes of each other.
The corruption network was fighting back.
Julia called from the secure operations center.
“I unlocked the main account.”
“How much is there?” I asked.
“Four hundred eighty million dollars.”
Maya looked toward Charles.
He smiled again.
“That money does not belong to us.”
“Who does it belong to?”
His eyes settled on me.
“People who will kill everyone in this tunnel to keep their names hidden.”
May you like
A sharp sound echoed from above.
Then the tunnel lights went dark.
