Chapter 6 - THE MAN IN THE LOBBY

The officers ordered me away from the windows.

Detective Ruiz went downstairs with two uniformed officers.

Maya remained beside me.

Neither of us spoke.

Through the security camera, we watched Adrian enter the lobby.

He wore the same charcoal suit from dinner.

A small cut marked his cheek where a porcelain fragment had struck him.

He carried no bag.

His hands were visible.

He smiled when Detective Ruiz approached.

“I am here to collect personal belongings.”

“You are prohibited from contacting your wife.”

“My attorney has not received any protective order.”

“You received a release condition requiring no direct contact.”

Adrian’s smile faded.

“I am not contacting her.”

“You are standing inside her building.”

“I own half of the marital residence.”

I pressed the intercom button.

“No, you do not.”

Adrian looked toward the camera.

For a moment, he forgot the officers were watching.

Hatred transformed his face.

Then the mask returned.

“Claire, we need to speak privately.”

Detective Ruiz stepped closer.

“You were told not to contact her.”

He ignored her.

“My family is willing to overlook what happened.”

Maya stared at the screen.

“They are willing to overlook it?”

Adrian continued.

“You are injured and emotional.”

“I required six stitches because you hit me with a plate.”

His jaw tightened.

“You embarrassed my mother.”

“I refused to give her my home.”

“It is a condo.”

“It is mine.”

He looked directly into the camera.

“Nothing is yours after marriage.”

The words settled over me with brutal clarity.

That was what he believed.

My salary was his.

My work was his.

My property was his.

My silence was his.

Even my body was his to punish when I refused.

Detective Ruiz ordered him to leave.

Adrian reached inside his jacket.

Both officers reacted instantly.

He raised one hand.

“It is only an envelope.”

He placed it on the security desk.

“Give that to my wife.”

Then he walked out.

The officers waited until his car left the block.

Detective Ruiz brought the envelope upstairs in an evidence bag.

Inside was a photograph of my father.

He stood outside a rehabilitation facility in Sacramento.

My hands went cold.

My father had struggled with alcohol after my mother’s death.

Only a few people knew where he received treatment.

Adrian had never visited him.

On the back of the photograph, someone had written four words.

EVERYONE HAS A WEAK POINT.

Maya read the message.

“They are threatening him.”

I called the facility.

A nurse confirmed my father was safe.

Then she told me a man had called earlier asking about visiting hours.

The caller claimed to be my brother.

I had no brother.

Detective Ruiz arranged local police protection.

Still, fear crawled beneath my skin.

The Caldwells were losing control.

That made them more dangerous.

Maya’s phone began ringing.

Daniel’s name appeared.

She let it ring twice.

Then she answered on speaker.

“Where are you?” he asked.

“With Claire.”

“You need to come home.”

“No.”

A long pause followed.

“You are confused.”

“I am not confused.”

“My father’s attorney says you made false statements to the police.”

“I watched Adrian hit her.”

“You saw an accident.”

“I saw a man attack his wife.”

Daniel lowered his voice.

“Think about the children.”

“I am thinking about them.”

“Then do not destroy their future.”

Maya’s expression changed.

“I will not raise them to believe this is what family means.”

Daniel exhaled.

“My father says you took something from the basement.”

She looked at me.

“What does he think I took?”

“A blue ledger.”

Maya froze.

I remembered seeing a thin blue book inside one of the boxes.

An officer had carried it upstairs.

Then Eleanor had started the fire.

During the confusion, anyone could have moved it.

“I did not take it,” Maya said.

Daniel’s voice became cold.

“Then find out who did.”

The call ended.

Detective Ruiz contacted the evidence team.

They checked every item recovered from the basement.

There was no blue ledger.

Then I remembered Julia’s plastic food tray.

Beneath it, something blue had been visible near the wall.

I had assumed it was a folder.

“What if Julia hid it?”

May you like

Detective Ruiz called the hospital.

Julia was no longer in her room.
