Chapter 15 - THE HOUSE ON BAY STREET

I did not show the note to Detective Ruiz.
For the first time since the assault, I withheld evidence.
The decision frightened me.
But Adrian knew how to turn doubt into a weapon.
He could be lying.
He could also be telling the truth.
I contacted Julia through Samuel.
She examined a photographed page from the ledger.
One payment appeared beside Detective Ruiz’s name.
ELENA RUIZ - BAY STREET PROPERTY.
The amount was two hundred seventy-five thousand dollars.
My chest tightened.
Ruiz had been the first detective to believe me.
She protected Maya.
She helped rescue the children.
But good actions do not erase hidden money.
Julia continued reading.
The payment date was eleven years earlier.
At that time, Ruiz had been a patrol officer.
Her younger sister, Sofia, had died in an apartment fire owned by Caldwell Holdings.
The family later purchased Ruiz a house through a confidential settlement.
“Was it a bribe?” I asked.
“Maybe.”
“Or compensation?”
“The ledger does not explain motive.”
I confronted Ruiz inside a monitored interview room.
I placed the note on the table.
She read it without expression.
Then she saw the ledger entry.
Her face changed.
“The Caldwells did not buy my loyalty.”
“Then why did they buy your house?”
“They killed my sister.”
The answer came without hesitation.
Ruiz explained that Sofia repeatedly reported electrical problems in her building.
The landlord ignored her.
After the fire, Caldwell attorneys offered Ruiz money if she signed a nondisclosure agreement.
She accepted because her parents were facing foreclosure.
Then she spent eleven years investigating the family quietly.
“Why did you not disclose this case connection?”
“Because I would have been removed.”
“That is exactly why you should have disclosed it.”
“I know.”
Her voice softened.
“I believed I could remain objective.”
“Could you?”
She looked at the bloodstained photograph from the dinner.
“I do not know anymore.”
Ruiz surrendered her badge and requested an independent review.
She did not run.
She did not destroy evidence.
She did not ask me to trust her.
That mattered.
Agent Pierce remained missing.
The blue ledger was authenticated by forensic experts.
Adrian had returned it, but no one knew how he obtained it.
His attorney requested a private meeting.
I agreed only because federal agents would monitor every word.
Adrian entered the interview room in jail clothing.
His broken wrist was wrapped in a cast.
He looked smaller without the suit.
“You saved my life,” he said.
“I did not come for gratitude.”
“You came because of Ruiz.”
“I came because you had the ledger.”
He leaned back.
“Pierce offered to help me escape.”
“In exchange for what?”
“The location of the offshore accounts.”
“Why return the ledger?”
“Because Pierce planned to kill me after I gave him the codes.”
Adrian looked through the glass behind me.
“He works for someone close to Charles.”
“Who?”
“My mother.”
I almost laughed.
“Eleanor?”
“She built the Meridian relationship.”
“My father handled the companies.”
“My mother handled the people.”
“Where is Pierce?”
Adrian lowered his voice.
“He is going to kill Charles before Charles can testify.”
May you like
“Where?”
“At the federal courthouse tomorrow morning.”
