Chapter 11 - Seven Seconds

The darkness lasted seven seconds.

It felt like an hour.

Marcus grabbed me and pulled me behind the bed.

Another gunshot cracked against the wall.

Daniel shouted.

"Nobody move."

Then emergency lights flickered on.

Charles was gone.

Vanessa lay on the carpet.

For one terrible second, I thought she had been shot.

Then she lifted her head.

"I'm okay."

Marcus released me.

A bullet had torn through his jacket sleeve.

Blood ran from a shallow cut on his arm.

I stared at it.

"I'm fine."

Daniel rushed toward the balcony.

The doors were open.

Charles had escaped down an exterior maintenance stairway installed decades earlier.

Vanessa sat against the wall shaking.

I untied her wrists.

She looked at me in disbelief.

"You should hate me."

"I do."

Her eyes dropped.

"But I'm not Charles."

She almost smiled.

"That's fair."

Police surrounded the estate.

Charles vanished into the woods before officers arrived.

The silver case remained.

So did my father's confession.

But the brass key was gone.

Charles had taken it during the darkness.

Samuel was furious.

"Whatever that key opens, he now has access."

I looked around my father's bedroom.

"No."

Everyone turned toward me.

"He thinks he does."

I had noticed something years ago.

My father never trusted a single key.

Every important safe required two parts.

One physical.

One personal.

"He still needs something else."

"What?"

I looked toward the old portrait above the fireplace.

"My mother's brooch."

Marcus frowned.

"The sapphire?"

I nodded.

As a child, I once watched my father press the brooch into a carved indentation inside his desk.

A hidden compartment had opened.

I assumed it was a game.

Now I understood.

The brooch wasn't only jewelry.

It was a second key.

Vanessa slowly stood.

"I left it in the hotel safe."

Daniel immediately called security.

Nobody answered.

He tried again.

Then his expression changed.

"The hotel network is down."

Marcus walked toward the window.

"Charles."

Samuel checked his phone.

"Not only the hotel."

"What?"

"Sinclair reservation systems are offline nationwide."

Marcus turned.

"That's impossible."

My phone began vibrating.

Messages flooded the screen.

New York.

Chicago.

Miami.

Los Angeles.

Boston.

London.

Paris.

Every major Sinclair property had lost access to central systems.

Guest bookings vanished.

Payment networks froze.

Elevators switched to safety mode.

Digital room keys stopped functioning.

Charles wasn't attacking one hotel.

He was attacking the empire.

Then another message arrived.

From the board chairman.

Emergency notice.

Sinclair Holdings credit facilities have been frozen pending fraud review.

Samuel whispered, "He planned this."

"How long?"

"Years."

Vanessa stepped toward me.

"Blue Meridian."

I looked at her.

"What about it?"

"It wasn't only receiving money."

She swallowed.

"It was buying Sinclair debt."

Marcus understood first.

"Dear God."

Vanessa nodded.

"Charles owns enough debt to trigger default clauses."

Samuel checked the trust agreement.

"If the company enters technical default during an Article Nine dispute, beneficiary control can be suspended."

I stared at him.

"For how long?"

"Until a court determines ownership."

"Months?"

"Possibly years."

Charles didn't need to own Sinclair.

He only needed to freeze me long enough to dismantle it.

Daniel's phone rang.

He answered.

Then handed it to me.

Unknown number.

I raised it to my ear.

Charles's voice sounded cheerful.

"Hello, Amelia."

"What do you want?"

"Your mother's brooch."

"You can't have it."

"Then you should look outside."

I walked toward the window.

Flames rose from the far side of the estate.

The old archive building was burning.

Charles whispered.

"Your father kept more than one copy of everything."

I watched fire consume decades of family records.

"Bring me the sapphire by midnight."

"And if I don't?"

May you like

Charles laughed softly.

"Then tomorrow morning, Sinclair Hospitality ceases to exist."
