Chapter 12 - The Price Of An Empire

We had twelve hours.

Samuel assembled every attorney he trusted.

Marcus contacted lenders.

Daniel coordinated security.

Vanessa sat alone in the corner of the estate library.

For the first time, she had nowhere to belong.

I understood that feeling more than I wanted to.

At noon, Victoria woke up.

Her first words were not about herself.

"Don't give Charles the brooch."

I sat beside her hospital bed.

"You knew?"

"My father told me."

"Where is Edwin?"

Her eyes filled with fear.

"Charles has him."

The blood in Marcus's car belonged to Edwin.

Charles had injured him at the Harbor Hotel, then taken him somewhere else.

"Why didn't Charles kill him?"

"Because Dad knows where Thomas is."

I froze.

"Thomas is alive?"

Victoria nodded.

My uncle.

The man I had mourned as a child.

The man whose daughters had become weapons in someone else's war.

"Where?"

"I don't know."

"Does Vanessa?"

Victoria's face changed at her sister's name.

"You found her."

"Yes."

"How?"

"She found us."

Victoria closed her eyes.

"I tried for years."

"To contact her?"

"She hated me."

"Why?"

"Charles told her Dad chose me."

The pattern became clear.

Charles did not simply manipulate money.

He isolated people.

Then he fed their loneliness.

Marcus.

Vanessa.

My father.

Maybe even me.

I took Victoria's hand.

"Charles wants the brooch."

"Then he found the vault."

"What vault?"

Victoria looked surprised.

"You don't know?"

My father and Thomas had created a hidden archive beneath the first Sinclair property.

Not the Grand.

Not the Harbor Hotel.

The original twenty-six-room inn my grandfather owned before Sinclair Hospitality existed.

It had been demolished twenty years ago.

Or so I thought.

Victoria shook her head.

"The building above it was demolished."

"The vault stayed."

"Yes."

I understood the numbers from her hotel note.

4.

5.

6.

Not only property coordinates.

A date.

April 11, 1927.

The year the first Sinclair inn opened.

I called Samuel.

"Find everything we own connected to the original property."

He returned the answer within minutes.

The land had never been sold.

It was buried inside a tiny subsidiary called S-1927 Holdings.

Charles had spent decades searching for documents that were literally under property he indirectly managed.

By sunset, we reached the site.

An abandoned warehouse now stood above it.

Vanessa came with us.

Victoria insisted.

"She knows Charles better than any of us."

Marcus disagreed.

I made the decision.

Vanessa joined us.

Inside the basement, we found an old stone wall.

At its center was a metal plate shaped like a keyhole surrounded by a circular sapphire setting.

The brass key opened the first lock.

The brooch opened the second.

Charles had one.

We had the other.

He needed both.

Then applause echoed through the basement.

Charles stepped from the shadows.

Four armed men surrounded him.

Edwin Mercer stood beside them, wrists bound.

Charles smiled.

"Family reunion."

Vanessa stepped backward.

Charles looked at her.

"Disappointed in me?"

She said nothing.

He held up the brass key.

"Give me the brooch."

I looked toward Edwin.

Blood stained his shirt.

He shook his head.

"No."

Charles pressed a gun against Edwin's back.

"Choose carefully."

Marcus moved closer to me.

I whispered, "Trust me."

Then I removed my mother's sapphire brooch.

Vanessa stared.

Charles smiled.

I threw it across the room.

He caught it.

"Amelia."

Marcus sounded horrified.

Charles inserted both keys.

The ancient mechanism clicked.

The vault door opened.

Charles laughed.

Then stopped.

The vault was empty.

Except for one envelope.

May you like

His name was written across it.

CHARLES WHITMORE.
