Chapter 19 - Why Marcus Chose Me

Fourteen years earlier, Marcus Vale saw me for the first time inside a hotel bar in New Orleans.
That was the story he had always told.
Two strangers.
One delayed flight.
One drink.
A conversation lasting until sunrise.
Romantic.
Accidental.
Perfect.
It had been a lie.
Marcus stood beneath the hotel canopy.
Rain began falling again.
Almost exactly as it had the night everything changed.
"I knew who you were."
I closed my eyes.
"Before we met?"
"Yes."
"How?"
"Charles."
The answer hurt even though I expected it.
Marcus had been twenty-nine.
Ambitious.
Broke compared with the people he wanted to become.
Charles approached him with an opportunity.
Meet Amelia Sinclair.
Gain her trust.
Get close to Richard.
Report anything useful.
"Did you agree?"
"Yes."
The rain grew heavier.
I didn't move beneath the canopy.
Marcus continued.
"I went to New Orleans because Charles told me where you'd be."
"Did you plan the delayed flight too?"
"No."
Almost funny.
Almost.
"So our first meeting was staged."
"At first."
"At first?"
Marcus stepped closer.
"You were supposed to be an assignment."
I laughed bitterly.
"How romantic."
"Then you spent forty minutes telling me why you hated people who pretended to like you because of your last name."
I remembered.
That conversation had been one of the reasons I trusted him.
Marcus's eyes filled.
"I realized exactly what I was doing."
"When?"
"The first night."
"And you continued."
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because I wanted to see you again."
He contacted Richard three weeks later.
Not Charles.
He confessed everything.
Richard decided to use Marcus against Charles.
That was how Marcus became part of my father's investigation.
"Why didn't you tell me before we married?"
"Fear."
"Of losing me?"
"Yes."
"And after?"
"More fear."
I stared at the hotel doors.
"So our marriage started with a lie."
"Yes."
"And ended because you told yourself more lies were easier."
His face tightened.
"Yes."
There was nothing left for him to defend.
That mattered.
Not enough to fix us.
But enough to end the war between us.
"I filed the divorce papers this morning."
Marcus closed his eyes.
"I expected that."
"I'll keep my Sinclair shares."
"Of course."
"You keep what you earned independently."
"Fine."
"I don't want revenge."
He looked at me.
"I know."
"I want truth."
"You have it."
"All of it?"
Marcus reached into his coat.
He handed me a small velvet box.
Inside was my mother's sapphire brooch.
I looked at him.
"Where did you get this?"
"Evidence released it today."
He didn't try to pin it on me.
He simply held the box.
"I should have stopped Vanessa the moment I saw her wearing it."
"Yes."
"I should have stopped myself long before that."
I took the brooch.
Marcus looked toward the revolving doors.
"Are you going inside?"
"Yes."
"Then I'll leave."
He walked into the rain.
This time, nobody dragged him.
Nobody humiliated him.
He simply walked away from the empire he once believed defined him.
I watched until he disappeared around the corner.
Then Daniel approached.
"Amelia."
I turned.
"There's someone waiting in the boardroom."
"Who?"
He smiled.
"Your family."
Thomas.
Victoria.
Vanessa.
Edwin.
Samuel.
People connected by blood.
Choice.
Mistakes.
Forgiveness.
And consequences.
I entered the hotel.
Employees straightened as I passed.
Not because they feared me.
Because they finally knew who I was.
So did I.
But when the elevator doors opened on the executive floor, Samuel was waiting with a strange expression.
"What's wrong?"
He held an envelope.
"No return address."
My name was written on the front.
Inside was a single photograph.
My father stood beside a hotel I had never seen before.

On the back he had written one sentence.
THE SINCLAIR EMPIRE WAS NEVER ONLY HOTELS.
