Chapter 12 - VANESSA REMOVES THE MASK

Vanessa requested a meeting with my attorneys.

She offered information about Grant in exchange for protection from prosecution.

My first instinct was to refuse.

My grandfather advised me to listen.

“Understanding someone does not require forgiving them,” he said.

The meeting took place in a conference room at Whitmore Children’s Hospital.

Vanessa entered without designer clothing.

She wore loose gray pants and a black sweater.

Her stomach was noticeably smaller.

Miriam noticed it too.

“Are you pregnant?” she asked.

Vanessa looked down.

“No.”

The word barely left her mouth.

I felt no surprise.

Only a tired sense of confirmation.

“Did Grant know?” I asked.

“Not at first.”

“At first?”

Vanessa folded her hands on the table.

“I was pregnant when we met.”

The room became still.

“It was not Grant’s baby.”

She swallowed.

“The father disappeared when I told him.”

“What happened to the pregnancy?”

“I miscarried three months ago.”

For a moment, her expression showed genuine grief.

Then the grief hardened.

“Grant had already promised to leave you.”

“So you continued pretending.”

“I thought I might become pregnant again.”

“By Grant?”

“Yes.”

I looked away.

The betrayal was painful.

The calculation behind it was worse.

Vanessa had purchased a realistic maternity form to maintain the deception.

She sent Grant altered ultrasound images downloaded from an online parenting forum.

She scheduled the Swiss clinic because she planned to undergo fertility treatment after leaving the country.

She believed she could create a pregnancy before Grant discovered the truth.

“Why are you telling us this?” Miriam asked.

“Because Grant blamed everything on me at the airport.”

Vanessa’s voice sharpened.

“He told the police I created the false companies.”

“Did you?”

“Yes.”

The answer was immediate.

“But he designed the transfers.”

She opened her bag slowly.

Security watched from the doorway.

Vanessa removed a small flash drive.

“Every conversation is on this.”

Grant had recorded himself discussing the financial scheme.

Vanessa secretly copied the files as insurance.

She also had photographs of company records, invoices, and the counterfeit equipment agreement.

“Why steal Emma’s coat?” I asked.

That question seemed to affect her more than the legal accusations.

She looked down.

“I wanted you to know he had chosen me.”

“You wore my children’s initials into their NICU.”

“I know.”

“Did that make you feel powerful?”

“For a few minutes.”

She looked toward me.

“Then your grandfather walked in.”

I did not smile.

“My grandfather was not the reason you were powerless.”

She frowned.

“You were powerless because everything you believed you had won depended on Grant’s lies.”

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

I felt no satisfaction.

I simply felt finished.

“Give the evidence to Miriam,” I said.

“And return my mother’s pendant.”

Vanessa removed the pearl necklace from her pocket.

She placed it on the table between us.

“I’m sorry.”

I picked it up.

“No.”

May you like

My voice remained calm.

“You are sorry that the story did not end the way you expected.”
