Chapter 2 - THE MAN BEHIND THE NAME

Grant opened his mouth.

No words came out.

My grandfather waited.

He had built his empire by allowing people enough silence to expose themselves.

Vanessa was the first to recover.

“There must be some misunderstanding,” she said.

She stepped forward with a nervous smile.

“We came to support Emma.”

My grandfather’s gaze moved to the ivory maternity coat.

His eyes stopped on the embroidery near the open collar.

Noah and Elise’s initials were visible in pale gold thread.

“Supporting her by wearing her belongings?” he asked.

Vanessa immediately pulled the coat closed.

Grant forced a laugh.

“Mr. Whitmore, this is a private marital matter.”

“Chairman Whitmore,” the hospital administrator corrected.

Grant looked toward him.

The administrator did not look away.

My grandfather extended his hand toward Grant.

“The documents.”

Grant held the leather folder tighter.

“They’re already signed.”

“I did not ask about their status.”

His voice remained calm.

“I asked for the documents.”

Grant handed them over.

My grandfather opened the folder and examined the first few pages.

He read the section transferring the medical supply company to Grant.

Then he read the settlement concerning the apartment, vehicles, investments, and child support.

His expression did not change.

That frightened Grant more than anger would have.

“You prepared this agreement while my granddaughter was unconscious?” he asked.

Grant adjusted his tie.

“Our marriage had already ended.”

“My granddaughter nearly died two days ago.”

“That doesn’t change the legal situation.”

“No,” my grandfather said.

“But it tells me everything about your character.”

He handed the folder to the hospital’s general counsel, who had entered behind the chief medical officer.

“Preserve this as evidence.”

Grant stepped forward.

“You can’t take my property.”

The nearest security officer moved between them.

My grandfather looked almost amused.

“You entered a restricted neonatal unit, intimidated a patient recovering from emergency surgery, threatened a nurse, and abandoned two premature children while attempting to seize assets funded by my family.”

Grant’s face reddened.

“I built that company.”

“You managed it.”

“I created its success.”

“You were given access to suppliers, capital, and contracts through a trust you never bothered to investigate.”

Grant stared at him.

My grandfather turned toward me.

“Emma, did you ever tell him where the original funding came from?”

“No.”

“Did he ask?”

“Not once.”

My grandfather nodded.

“People rarely question money when they believe they deserve it.”

Vanessa began taking off the coat.

Her hands trembled as she struggled with the buttons.

“I didn’t know it belonged to her,” she said.

“You commented on the embroidered initials,” Nurse Morales replied.

Vanessa shot her an angry look.

My grandfather heard it.

“Security,” he said.

“Escort Ms. Lane to a private waiting room.”

Vanessa stepped backward.

“You can’t separate me from Grant.”

“We are not separating you from him.”

He turned to Grant.

“You will be going with her.”

Grant pointed toward me.

“She signed the divorce agreement.”

My grandfather looked down at the papers again.

“She signed while medicated, recovering from major surgery, and surrounded by people who were threatening her financial survival.”

“She knew what she was doing.”

“I did,” I said.

Every face turned toward me.

I looked at Grant.

“I signed because I wanted a permanent record of exactly how far you were willing to go.”

The color left his face again.

The hospital’s general counsel closed the leather folder.

My grandfather gave Grant one final look.

“You believed those pages gave you freedom.”

May you like

His voice lowered.

“They may become the strongest evidence against you.”
