Chapter 7 - VANESSA’S SECRET COMPANY

Vanessa Lane had registered V.L. Global Investments six weeks before the twins were born.

The company listed no employees, no office, and no legitimate business activity.

It existed only on paper.

Yet Halston Medical Supply had transferred nearly two million dollars into its account.

Miriam traced the money through consulting fees, development contracts, and international licensing payments.

None of the services had been performed.

Vanessa had signed every invoice.

Grant had approved every payment.

“They believed no one would review the records until after the divorce,” Miriam said.

I turned another page.

The signatures were obvious.

Grant had not even tried to hide his involvement.

“He thought the company would become his under the settlement.”

“Yes.”

Miriam tapped one section.

“He also backdated several ownership documents.”

My grandfather removed his glasses.

“That is fraud.”

“It may be worse.”

Miriam handed us another report.

“The private maternity clinic in Switzerland confirmed that Vanessa scheduled an appointment under a false name.”

“Why use a false name?” I asked.

“They will not release medical information without authorization.”

My grandfather leaned back.

“Perhaps she wanted privacy.”

“Or perhaps the pregnancy is not what Grant believes.”

I looked toward Miriam.

She hesitated.

“One of Vanessa’s former assistants contacted our investigators.”

“What did she say?”

“Vanessa began wearing maternity clothing before she announced her pregnancy.”

“That does not prove anything.”

“No.”

Miriam placed a photograph on the table.

It showed Vanessa entering a private women’s health center eight weeks earlier.

The clinic specialized in surrogacy arrangements, fertility treatments, and cosmetic pregnancy prosthetics for film productions.

My grandfather frowned.

“Cosmetic prosthetics?”

“Realistic maternity forms worn beneath clothing.”

I remembered the way Vanessa had rested her hand over her stomach.

The curve beneath her dress had looked perfect.

Almost too perfect.

“Grant believes she is six months pregnant,” I said.

Miriam nodded.

“But according to her former assistant, Vanessa refused every doctor Grant recommended.”

Vanessa had also avoided drinking water in front of him.

She claimed the babies’ movements were too painful for anyone else to touch.

She never allowed Grant to attend appointments.

I should have felt satisfaction.

Instead, I felt exhausted.

Grant had destroyed his marriage for a woman who might be deceiving him exactly as he had deceived me.

My grandfather closed the file.

“Do not tell him yet.”

Miriam looked surprised.

“Why not?”

“Because people make their most revealing choices when they believe their lies are still protected.”

His words echoed the advice he had given me years earlier.

Never advertise your wealth.

People reveal who they truly are when they think you have nothing.

Grant had revealed himself.

Now it was Vanessa’s turn.

A nurse approached my chair.

“Elise is ready for skin-to-skin contact.”

Every legal document disappeared from my thoughts.

I looked toward my daughter.

“Really?”

The nurse smiled.

“For a few minutes.”

My grandfather immediately moved the reports away.

“Then business can wait.”

For the first time since Grant entered the NICU, I held Elise against my chest.

She weighed less than three pounds.

Her breath felt like the faintest whisper against my skin.

I lowered my face toward her tiny head.

May you like

“You are not a burden,” I whispered.

“You are the reason I will never be afraid again.”
