Chapter 11 - JUDITH WAS ARRESTED

Judith was arrested three days later.

The recovered video changed everything.

Martin’s eyewitness statement supported it.

Rachel’s photographs damaged Judith’s claim about the scratches.

The hospital records documented my injuries.

The family group chat showed an attempted cover-up.

Graham’s administrative login showed that he had deleted the recording.

Judith was charged with serious assault-related offenses under the applicable state law.

Graham became the subject of a separate investigation concerning destruction of evidence and witness coordination.

The woman who had spent years controlling every room suddenly had no control over the booking photograph that appeared online.

Her expression was furious.

Not ashamed.

Not frightened.

Furious.

Graham blamed me.

His attorney sent Rebecca a proposal.

If I agreed not to provide additional statements about Graham’s involvement, he would cooperate fully with my divorce request.

Rebecca read it twice.

Then she looked at me.

“This is not a deal I would advise accepting.”

“I wasn’t going to.”

She nodded.

“Good.”

That evening, Richard called me.

Judith’s husband had barely spoken since the incident.

“Nora.”

His voice trembled.

“I want to apologize.”

“For what?”

“For all the years I saw what she was becoming.”

I said nothing.

Richard continued.

“I told myself keeping the peace was protecting the family.”

“That seems to be everyone’s favorite excuse.”

“I know.”

“No, Richard.”

My voice sharpened.

“You all knew she was cruel.”

“You just thought someone else would always absorb it.”

He began crying.

I felt no satisfaction.

Only exhaustion.

“You could have stopped her years ago.”

“Yes.”

“But stopping her would have made your life uncomfortable.”

Silence.

“That’s true.”

For once, nobody argued with me.

Before hanging up, Richard told me Judith had demanded he use their retirement savings to hire an aggressive defense team.

He refused.

For the first time in forty years, Richard had refused her.

Judith responded by threatening divorce.

I nearly laughed at the irony.

Then Richard said something unexpected.

“There’s something you should know about Graham.”

My stomach tightened.

“What?”

“After you were taken to the hospital, he came back to the house before the police arrived.”

“I know.”

“No.”

Richard’s voice dropped.

“You know about the camera.”

“I’m talking about the envelope.”

“What envelope?”

May you like

“The one he took from Judith’s desk.”

And suddenly the deleted video was no longer the only thing Graham had removed that night.
