Chapter 13 - THE FAMILY STARTED CRACKING

Judith’s arrest divided the family overnight.

Denise stopped defending her publicly.

Richard moved into a hotel.

Martin agreed to testify.

Rachel turned over her phone voluntarily.

Two relatives who had originally supported Judith suddenly remembered details they had previously forgotten.

Fear had kept the family united.

Consequences tore it apart.

Judith blamed me for everything.

Through her attorney, she claimed I had manipulated witnesses.

She accused Rachel of seeking attention.

She accused Martin of holding an old financial grudge.

She accused Richard of betrayal.

She accused Graham of weakness.

Everyone was responsible except Judith.

Then she violated the no-contact order.

The message came from an unfamiliar number.

You got what you wanted.

You took my son.

I showed Detective Ortiz.

She added it to the file.

A second message arrived.

He will hate you when this is over.

Then a third.

He always comes back to me.

I did not respond.

The messages told me more about Judith than any courtroom testimony ever could.

To her, Graham was not a grown man.

He was property.

And I had spent six years asking property to choose me.

Two days later, Rachel called.

Her voice sounded panicked.

“Graham came to my apartment.”

My stomach dropped.

“What did he want?”

“He wanted me to change my statement.”

I sat forward carefully.

“What exactly did he say?”

“He said I didn’t actually see the push.”

“He offered to pay off my student loans if I clarified that part.”

I closed my eyes.

“How much?”

“Twenty-two thousand dollars.”

“Did you take anything?”

“No.”

“Did you record him?”

There was a pause.

“Yes.”

My eyes opened.

Rachel had started recording almost immediately after Graham entered.

His voice was unmistakable.

He never directly said, Lie for me.

He was more careful than that.

But he said enough.

“You don’t want to be responsible for putting Aunt Judith in prison.”

“You only saw a second.”

“Memory changes after trauma.”

“I can help you financially if you stop pretending you’re certain.”

Detective Ortiz received the recording that evening.

The investigation surrounding Graham expanded.

When Rebecca heard it, she leaned back in her chair.

“Your husband is making increasingly serious decisions.”

“He’s desperate.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“Desperation explains emotion.”

“It doesn’t excuse strategy.”

That distinction stayed with me.

Graham was not simply panicking.

He was planning.

May you like

And every plan required me to become less credible.

Three days later, I discovered exactly how far he was willing to go.
