Chapter 16 - THE MESSAGE BEFORE DINNER
The screenshot came from Denise.
She had finally decided to cooperate fully.
Judith had accidentally forwarded several texts to Denise while trying to send them to Graham.
Denise had saved them because Judith’s tone frightened her.
The messages began hours before Sunday dinner.
Judith wrote.
You need to get control of your wife.
Graham answered.
I’m handling it.
Judith responded.
You’ve been “handling it” for six years.
She has become disrespectful because you allow it.
Then came another message.
If she thinks she’s taking you to Denver, she’s wrong.
Graham replied.
Please don’t confront her tonight.
Judith wrote.
Then make sure she understands before she leaves.
The final message came at 3:14.
Bring Nora tonight.
I’m ending this Denver nonsense one way or another.
The prosecutor could not prove Judith planned to push me before I arrived.
But the messages established motive.
More importantly, they destroyed her claim that the argument downstairs had begun unexpectedly.
She was waiting for confrontation.
Graham knew it.
And he still brought me.
That realization hurt differently.
He had driven me to his mother’s house knowing she was furious.
He had not warned me.
When I asked why he seemed nervous before dinner, he told me work was stressful.
He had watched me walk through that front door without giving me the information I needed to protect myself.
Rebecca called him reckless.
I called it betrayal.
The case shifted quickly after Denise turned over her phone.
Prosecutors obtained expanded warrants for Judith and Graham’s communications.
Dozens of messages emerged.
Some were petty.
Some cruel.
A few were devastating.
Six months earlier, Graham had written.
Nora says Mom grabbed her again.
Judith responded.
Then teach your wife not to provoke me.
Graham wrote.
Just try to be careful.
No outrage.
No protection.
Just be careful.
As though the problem were leaving visible evidence.
My last remaining uncertainty disappeared.
Graham had known the pattern.
He had hidden it.
He had negotiated with it.
He had tried to manage it.
And when management failed, he chose concealment.
The prosecutor called Rebecca the following afternoon.
Graham’s attorney wanted a meeting.
He was offering to testify against Judith.
