Chapter 13 - THE SECRET INSIDE THE OAK

The mountain clinic stood beyond a narrow road surrounded by pine forest.

Federal aircraft could not land safely in the approaching storm.

Marcus’s team traveled by ground.

Elena remained at the hospital under Sloane’s protection.

Claire went with Marcus because she knew the clinic’s interior.

Naomi objected again.

Claire ignored her again.

“You married a difficult woman,” Naomi told Marcus quietly.

“I remember.”

The comment produced the first genuine smile Marcus had felt since the call from the baby shower.

It disappeared when they reached the clinic gate.

The facility claimed to specialize in maternal care for high-risk patients.

Its windows glowed warmly.

A stone sign carried the Carrington name.

No guards were visible.

The gate opened before the convoy stopped.

“They want us inside,” Naomi said.

Marcus checked the surrounding ridge.

“Then we use a different door.”

Claire led them toward an old maintenance path behind the clinic.

The route ended at a wooden service building.

Its frame was constructed from the same marked oak Marcus used for the crib.

CARRINGTON MEDICAL FOUNDATION.

Claire touched the burned stamp.

“The old archives used this wood.”

“The wood carried evidence between facilities,” Marcus said.

“Without electronic records.”

“Anna may have hidden more than one key.”

They entered the service building.

Inside were hundreds of dismantled desks, cabinets, and bed frames.

Each carried small carved numbers.

Claire found a desk with Anna’s childhood program number.

She opened a concealed panel.

A microdrive rested inside.

Elias connected it to an isolated device.

Anna appeared in a recorded message.

She looked ill but determined.

“If you found this, Cross is creating a replacement heir.”

“The woman registered under Elena’s name is not a volunteer.”

“Her name is Mara Ellis.”

“She was taken from a Carrington-funded shelter.”

“She is thirty-two weeks pregnant.”

“Her child has no connection to either family.”

“They intend to alter the records, use preserved genetic cells to certify the infant, and then allow the real mother to die under Elena’s identity.”

Claire covered her mouth.

The pattern repeated.

Anna had died under Claire’s identity.

Now another woman would die under Elena’s.

Anna continued.

“The delivery suite is below the north wing.”

“Access is controlled by the oak archive key.”

Marcus inserted the brass key into a hidden lock inside the desk.

A paper blueprint released.

Elena joined through a secure video connection and studied it.

“The north wing sits over an old mine shaft.”

“There is an exterior ventilation tunnel.”

Marcus followed her directions.

Naomi’s team entered through the tunnel while a second unit approached the front gate.

Inside the underground suite, Mara Ellis lay sedated.

Dr. Hale’s former assistant prepared surgical equipment.

Two men attempted to remove records.

Agents arrested them.

A refrigerated container held Elena’s preserved fetal cells.

Elias secured it.

Marcus checked Mara’s pulse.

She was alive.

Her baby remained stable.

Claire found a row of identity bracelets.

One bore Elena’s name.

Another carried Mara’s number.

A third carried the name Claire Vance.

The network maintained substitute identities ready for reuse.

Naomi searched the adjoining room.

She found passports, birth certificates, and death records from multiple countries.

“This is bigger than the Carringtons.”

Marcus looked at the wall of documents.

“It always was.”

Cross had used old-money families as respectable fronts.

The families received protection and wealth.

The network received hospitals, banks, and generational identities.

Alistair Carrington was not the king.

He was a regional custodian.

The true structure extended across borders.

Sloane called from the hospital.

“Cross escaped federal transport.”

Marcus’s grip tightened.

“How?”

“The convoy was redirected by a false bomb threat.”

“Inside help.”

“Yes.”

“Casualties?”

“Two agents injured.”

“Where is Cross?”

“Unknown.”

Naomi checked the clinic systems.

An administrator account had accessed the delivery records three minutes earlier.

Cross was watching remotely.

The screen changed.

He appeared from an unknown location.

“You continue treating symptoms,” he said.

Marcus faced the camera.

“And you continue hiding behind other people.”

“You believe exposing the network ends it.”

“It gives victims names.”

“It gives governments excuses.”

“You stole children.”

“I preserved useful lives.”

Claire stepped forward.

“You turned people into keys.”

Cross looked at her.

“You created the first genetic safeguard.”

“To prevent theft.”

“And I improved it.”

“You corrupted it.”

“Those are political words.”

“They are human words.”

Cross smiled.

“Anna understood more than you.”

Claire’s face tightened.

“What do you mean?”

“She did not create the survivor network to destroy us.”

“She wanted control.”

“No.”

“She knew governments would bury the children again.”

“She intended to replace Palisade with something independent.”

Marcus remembered the seven hundred million dollars.

Anna had funded safe houses, legal identities, treatment, and witness protection beyond official channels.

That did not mean she supported Cross.

It meant she trusted no government completely.

Cross continued.

“The money is still active.”

“The survivor network follows instructions embedded in Anna’s account.”

“Who controls it?” Marcus asked.

Cross looked toward the oak archive.

“The next Vance child.”

Elena heard him through the call.

“My baby?”

“The account transfers authority to the first grandchild of Marcus and Claire.”

Marcus’s blood ran cold.

The Carrington trust unlocked stolen Palisade funds.

Anna’s account controlled the survivor network.

Elena’s child stood at the center of both.

That was why every faction needed the baby.

Alistair wanted access to the stolen money.

Cross wanted control of the biological identity system.

Unknown survivor-network leaders might believe the child belonged to their cause.

Cross leaned closer to the camera.

“You cannot hide the child forever.”

Marcus answered.

“I do not need forever.”

“How long?”

“Long enough to remove every person who believes a child can be owned.”

Cross laughed.

“You still think this is a rescue operation.”

The screen changed.

A live image showed Marcus’s garage.

The unfinished crib remained on the workbench.

An armed figure entered the frame.

He removed the remaining oak boards.

Marcus recognized him as one of Cross’s former operatives.

“He is searching the wood,” Naomi said.

Cross nodded.

“Anna embedded the survivor account access sequence inside the crib materials.”

Marcus remembered the split seam.

The brass key had been only one hidden object.

Other boards might contain other components.

The operative scanned the wood.

He found a metal strip inside the headboard.

Cross smiled.

“There it is.”

Marcus called the local protection team.

No one answered.

The operative removed the strip and walked toward the garage exit.

Then the feed shook.

A figure struck him from behind.

Gideon Warren appeared on the camera.

He had survived the poisoning.

He moved weakly but decisively.

He took the metal strip.

Cross’s smile vanished.

Warren looked directly into the hidden camera.

“Marcus.”

His voice came through the garage microphone.

“Anna gave me instructions.”

“Do not bring the child to any government facility.”

Marcus activated the speaker.

“Where are you going?”

“Somewhere Cross cannot follow.”

“Gideon, stop.”

Warren shook his head.

“The survivor network has already voted.”

“Voted on what?”

“Whether Elena’s baby is safer with you.”

Marcus felt the room grow colder.

“What was the decision?”

Warren’s face filled with regret.

“No.”

The garage feed went black.

Elena’s voice came through Marcus’s earpiece.

“Dad.”

“I heard.”

“They are coming for the baby.”

Marcus looked at Claire.

The child was still months from birth.

Yet the conflict had already moved beyond the Carrington family.

The survivor network had spent years protecting people from governments, banks, and medical institutions.

They viewed Marcus as the commander who unknowingly signed the original transfers.

They viewed Claire as the architect whose safeguards were corrupted.

They might consider both parents responsible for the system that harmed them.

Naomi received an encrypted transmission.

A message filled her screen.

RETURN THE HEIR PROTOCOL.

SURRENDER ALL GENETIC RECORDS.

THE CHILD WILL BE PLACED UNDER NEUTRAL PROTECTION AT BIRTH.

Marcus read it twice.

“Neutral protection.”

Claire’s voice turned hard.

“They mean they will take our grandchild.”

A second message arrived.

It contained coordinates and a deadline.

Thirty days.

Marcus looked at Elena on the video screen.

She was twenty-eight weeks pregnant.

In thirty days, she would reach approximately thirty-two weeks.

May you like

The network did not plan to wait for birth.

They planned to force one.
