Chapter 8 - THE WIFE THEY PLANNED TO ERASE

Marcus ordered the archive removed from the underground chamber.

Every box received two tracking seals.

Every digital device was duplicated before leaving the estate.

Naomi sent federal teams after the vehicles that escaped through the service tunnel.

They found one abandoned near a private airfield.

The others disappeared.

Alistair, Richard, Victoria, Wexler, and Dr. Hale were now fugitives under sealed federal warrants.

Nathan Cross remained inside government headquarters.

Officially, he claimed the image on the monitor was fabricated.

He ordered Marcus to surrender Palisade command and return the archive.

Marcus refused.

For the first time in more than a decade, two men possessed competing authority over the same covert task force.

Cross controlled the official command center.

Marcus controlled the original charter.

The conflict could not remain secret for long.

Elena was moved to a federal safe house outside the city.

The property looked deliberately ordinary.

A faded mailbox leaned near the road.

Children’s bicycles rested beside the neighboring porch.

The windows were reinforced behind lace curtains.

Marcus checked every room himself.

Elena watched him inspect air vents, light fixtures, and wall outlets.

“I used to think you were overly cautious,” she said.

“I used to think I was cautious enough.”

She sat at the kitchen table.

The movement caused her to wince.

Marcus noticed.

“Pain?”

“My hip.”

“We should return to the hospital.”

“The doctor examined me twice.”

“Then he can examine you three times.”

Elena almost smiled.

“I missed this version of you.”

“What version?”

“The father who thinks he can solve everything by checking it one more time.”

Marcus sat across from her.

“I cannot solve everything.”

“No.”

She touched his hand.

“But you always checked.”

The smile faded from her face.

“Until I stopped letting you.”

Marcus looked down.

“They trained you to hide.”

“They rewarded me whenever I pretended things were fine.”

Richard bought gifts after humiliating her.

Victoria praised her when she wore the clothes selected for her.

Alistair granted access to family accounts after Elena attended medical appointments without question.

Every comfort had been tied to obedience.

Every act of resistance became evidence of instability.

Elena took a slow breath.

“I want to make a statement.”

“Sloane is preparing one.”

“I do not mean a legal statement.”

Marcus understood.

“Public.”

“Yes.”

“They will attack you.”

“They already have.”

“They will show private recordings.”

“They recorded me crying.”

“They may have recordings from your bedroom.”

Elena’s face flushed, but her voice remained steady.

“Then the shame belongs to the people who placed the cameras.”

Marcus studied her.

She was afraid.

Courage did not remove fear.

It gave fear a direction.

Sloane arrived with Naomi and a media-security specialist.

They reviewed the risks.

Richard’s attorneys had already released a statement claiming Elena was suffering a pregnancy-related mental-health crisis.

The statement described Marcus as an estranged father with a history of classified violence.

It suggested he manipulated his daughter to settle an old grievance against the Carrington family.

Elena read it without visible reaction.

Then she picked up a pen.

“They called you estranged.”

“They are building distance between us.”

“We spoke every Sunday.”

“They know.”

“You came to every appointment I told you about.”

“They know that too.”

Elena crossed out a sentence in the draft.

“I will not defend our relationship.”

Sloane looked at her.

“Why?”

“Because they chose the accusation.”

“If I spend the statement proving I love my father, I am answering their story.”

She wrote another line.

“I will tell mine.”

The statement was recorded in the safe house.

Elena sat before a plain wall.

She wore no jewelry.

No makeup covered the bruise.

“My name is Elena Vance Carrington.”

“Two days ago, my husband’s sister struck me and pushed me to the floor while I was twenty-eight weeks pregnant.”

“My husband prevented me from leaving.”

“He had already arranged for me to be taken to a psychiatric facility.”

“I have since learned that I was given medication without my informed consent.”

“I have learned that hidden cameras recorded me inside my bedroom.”

“I have learned that medical records describing me as unstable were created before I reported the abuse.”

“I am speaking because silence did not protect my child.”

“It protected the people hurting us.”

She paused.

Marcus watched from behind the camera.

Elena continued.

“I do not ask the public to decide my case.”

“I ask that the evidence be allowed to exist without being purchased, erased, or buried.”

“I am not property.”

“My child is not a financial instrument.”

“And no family name is old enough to own another human being.”

The video was released simultaneously through multiple independent news organizations.

Within twenty minutes, it had been viewed more than three million times.

Other women began contacting Sloane’s office.

A former Carrington employee described secret medical evaluations.

A domestic worker reported being forced to sign nondisclosure agreements after witnessing assaults.

A woman who dated Richard in college said his family threatened her after a pregnancy scare.

The flawless exterior began cracking.

Richard responded through an attorney.

He said Elena had been coerced.

Victoria released a prerecorded charity video claiming she had devoted her life to protecting vulnerable women.

Alistair remained silent.

Nathan Cross convened an internal review of Marcus’s authority.

He called the public statement a threat to national security because it exposed the existence of Palisade.

Marcus saw the strategy.

Cross would use secrecy to protect corruption.

By evening, the safe house received an encrypted call.

Richard appeared on the screen.

His location was masked.

Elena sat across from the monitor.

Marcus remained out of frame.

Richard smiled gently.

“Elena.”

She did not answer.

“You look tired.”

Her hand moved across her stomach.

“What do you want?”

“I want you safe.”

“You tried to have me restrained.”

“I followed bad advice.”

“You signed the order.”

“I was frightened.”

“You threatened to take my child.”

“I was angry.”

“You watched me in our bedroom.”

“Security staff installed the cameras.”

“In the ceiling above our bed.”

“I did not review intimate footage.”

“Did you know it existed?”

Richard’s silence answered.

Elena leaned forward.

“What did you marry me for?”

His expression softened.

“I loved you.”

“What did you marry me for?”

“I still love you.”

“What did you marry me for?”

Richard looked away.

When he spoke again, the warmth had disappeared.

“You were the only way to stabilize the trust.”

Elena closed her eyes briefly.

The truth still hurt even when she expected it.

“Did any part of you love me?”

Richard’s jaw tightened.

“I made your life extraordinary.”

“You made it expensive.”

“I gave you everything.”

“You took my name, my privacy, my medical choices, my money, and my car keys.”

“I gave you status.”

“I had a father who loved me.”

Richard’s face hardened.

“You had a widowed pensioner living in a workshop.”

Marcus remained still.

Elena looked directly into the camera.

“My father is standing here.”

Richard’s eyes shifted.

For the first time, he realized Marcus had heard everything.

Marcus stepped into frame.

Richard recovered quickly.

“You are destroying your daughter’s future.”

Marcus shook his head.

“You confused your family with her future.”

Richard leaned closer to his camera.

“You do not understand what Cross can do.”

“You do.”

“I understand enough.”

“Then come in.”

Richard laughed.

“You expect me to surrender?”

“I expect cowards to look for exits.”

Richard’s smile vanished.

“You always thought soldiers were braver than businessmen.”

“I never confused money with courage.”

“You will lose Elena.”

Marcus’s voice lowered.

“You already did.”

Richard’s eyes moved toward something beyond his screen.

Someone had entered the room with him.

His expression changed from anger to fear.

A woman’s voice spoke off camera.

“End the call.”

Elena recognized Victoria.

Richard looked back at the screen.

“Listen to me.”

The urgency was new.

“Your mother left more than evidence.”

Marcus stepped closer.

“What?”

Richard glanced behind him.

“She left a person.”

The call disconnected.

Naomi began tracing the signal.

The route bounced through six countries before returning to a location less than forty miles away.

A private Carrington lake house.

Federal teams prepared to move.

Before Marcus left, Elena caught his sleeve.

“Richard said Mom left a person.”

“He could be manipulating us.”

“He sounded afraid.”

“Fear can also be performed.”

“Not Richard’s.”

Marcus looked at her.

She knew her husband’s masks better than anyone.

“What did it look like when he was truly afraid?”

“His left eye twitched.”

Marcus replayed the call.

Richard’s left eye had twitched twice.

At the lake house, agents found the front door open.

No vehicles remained.

The interior smelled of smoke.

Files burned inside the stone fireplace.

Naomi’s team extinguished them.

Marcus searched the upper floor.

A locked bedroom stood at the end of the corridor.

He forced the door.

Eleanor Carrington sat tied to a chair.

A bruise marked her temple.

Marcus cut the restraints.

“Where are they?”

“Gone.”

“Who did this?”

“My husband’s men.”

“Why?”

Eleanor looked toward the hallway.

“Because I gave Elena the key.”

Marcus helped her stand.

“What did Claire leave?”

Eleanor’s eyes filled.

“A daughter.”

Marcus froze.

Eleanor shook her head quickly.

“Not another child.”

“Then what do you mean?”

“She left Elena a guardian.”

“Who?”

Eleanor gripped his arm.

“The person who has watched over her since Claire disappeared.”

Footsteps sounded downstairs.

Naomi called that the house was clear.

Eleanor’s voice became urgent.

“Marcus, you must understand.”

“Claire did not remain hidden for twelve years.”

“She came back.”

“When?”

“Six years ago.”

“Where is she?”

Eleanor began to answer.

A shot shattered the bedroom window.

Marcus pulled her down.

A second shot struck the wall.

Agents returned fire toward the tree line.

Marcus shielded Eleanor behind the bed.

She clutched his jacket.

“They know I was going to tell you.”

“Tell me now.”

Eleanor’s breathing came fast.

“Claire returned because she learned Richard had met Elena.”

“Where did she go after that?”

“She confronted Nathan Cross.”

Marcus leaned closer.

“What happened?”

Eleanor’s lips trembled.

“He brought her to Alistair.”

Another shot struck the window frame.

Marcus waited.

Eleanor looked directly into his eyes.

“Claire is alive.”

The room seemed to tilt.

“Where?”

Eleanor whispered the answer.

“Inside the Carrington estate.”

Marcus stared at her.

“We searched every room.”

“Not every house.”

“What does that mean?”

May you like

Eleanor pointed toward the lake.

“There is another estate beneath the water.”
