Chapter 18 - THE BLACKOUT

The courthouse emergency system sealed every exterior exit.

Smoke moved through the lower corridors.

It was not fire smoke.

Elias identified a military-grade visual suppressant mixed with a mild respiratory irritant.

Cross wanted confusion without destroying the building.

He needed the witnesses alive long enough to control them.

Naomi established a command position inside the courtroom.

Marcus studied the old courthouse plans.

Elena had restored portions of the public atrium during her final year at university.

She remembered a maintenance passage behind the judges’ chambers.

“It reaches the central ventilation spine,” she said.

“Can we clear the smoke?” Naomi asked.

“Not from here.”

“Where?”

“Mechanical level beneath the roof.”

Marcus looked at Claire.

“Take Elena and the baby into the evidence vault.”

Elena shook her head.

“The vault ventilation connects to the same system.”

“Then the jury room.”

“No independent air.”

Marcus’s frustration rose.

“Where is safe?”

Elena looked at the blueprint.

“The clock tower.”

Claire stared at her.

“It is six floors above us.”

“The tower has original exterior vents.”

Naomi assigned four agents to escort Elena, Claire, and the baby.

Marcus headed toward the mechanical level.

Before leaving, he touched the baby’s forehead.

Elena looked at him.

“Come back.”

“I will.”

This time, the promise did not sound like a soldier’s certainty.

It sounded like a father’s choice.

Richard emerged from a service corridor near the west stairwell.

He wore handcuffs on one wrist.

Blood marked his collar.

A federal guard had helped him escape before Cross’s men attacked.

The guard was killed.

Richard had taken his access card.

Naomi aimed at him.

“On the floor.”

“I know where Cross is going.”

“Down.”

Richard knelt.

“He needs the baby’s live paternal certification.”

“The certification was seized.”

“He created a second pathway.”

“How?”

“Me.”

Richard raised his cuffed wrist.

“A medical implant was placed beneath my skin when I was nineteen.”

Marcus stared at him.

Richard had never known its true purpose.

Cross could use his live biometric marker and baby Claire’s blood to activate the remaining heir protocol.

“That is why he freed you,” Naomi said.

“He needs you alive.”

Richard nodded.

“And he needs the child.”

Marcus cut the remaining handcuff from the railing.

Naomi objected.

“He is still a defendant.”

“He is also the target.”

Richard looked at Marcus.

“You trust me?”

“No.”

Marcus handed him an emergency respirator.

“I trust your desire to survive.”

They moved toward the mechanical level.

Gunfire echoed from the eastern wing.

Cross’s men occupied the prisoner garage and central atrium.

Alistair attempted to reach a helicopter on the roof.

Victoria had disappeared into the family-court corridors.

Judge Wexler remained with Cross.

Richard guided Marcus through a prisoner access route.

“When did you learn about the implant?”

“Cross told me after the airfield.”

“Why did you not disclose it?”

Richard looked ashamed.

“I thought it might give me leverage.”

Marcus stopped.

“Even after everything?”

“I did not know what else I had.”

“You had the truth.”

Richard looked away.

“I was never taught to value anything I could not trade.”

They reached the mechanical level.

Elias accessed the ventilation controls remotely.

The system required two manual valves.

Marcus opened the first.

Richard crossed the platform toward the second.

A shot struck the railing beside him.

Alistair stood at the upper stairway holding a pistol.

His expensive suit was torn.

His face had lost every trace of aristocratic calm.

“Richard.”

Richard froze.

Alistair aimed at him.

“You ruined the family.”

Richard stared at the man he believed was his father for most of his life.

“You built the family on a lie.”

“I gave you my name.”

“You gave me a job.”

“I gave you an empire.”

“You gave me Elena because you needed her blood.”

Alistair’s weapon remained steady.

“You were supposed to control your wife.”

Richard laughed bitterly.

“That is what you think my failure was?”

“Yes.”

Richard looked toward Marcus.

Then back at Alistair.

“My failure was believing you.”

Alistair fired.

Marcus pulled Richard behind the ventilation unit.

The bullet struck metal.

Richard crawled toward the second valve.

Marcus moved along the opposite side.

Alistair tracked him.

“You were always sentimental, Vance.”

“You mistook that for weakness.”

“I mistook nothing.”

“You married your daughter to my house without knowing the price.”

Marcus reached the stair support.

“You sent a predator to study her.”

“And she loved him.”

Richard flinched.

Alistair continued.

“She chose the cage.”

Marcus’s voice became cold.

“People do not choose cages because the door is painted gold.”

He triggered the emergency steam release.

Vapor filled the platform.

Alistair fired blindly.

Marcus crossed the distance and struck the weapon from his hand.

Alistair fell against the railing.

Marcus pinned him.

Richard opened the second valve.

Fresh air moved through the courthouse.

Smoke began clearing from the lower halls.

Naomi’s agents regained visibility.

Alistair looked up at Marcus.

“You will never be free of this.”

Marcus restrained his wrists.

“I am not asking to be free.”

“I am asking you to answer.”

The agents took Alistair.

Richard touched the area beneath his left forearm.

“The implant is transmitting.”

Elias confirmed a signal moving toward the clock tower.

Cross knew where Elena was.

Marcus ran.

In the tower stairwell, Claire carried the baby while Elena climbed slowly.

Her postpartum body had not fully recovered.

Every step hurt.

Victoria appeared above them.

She held a weapon.

“Give me the child.”

Claire stopped.

“Elena, go back.”

Victoria laughed.

“Back to what?”

“Cross controls the lower floors.”

“I control the tower.”

Elena moved in front of Claire.

“You will have to shoot me.”

Victoria aimed at her.

“You always think motherhood makes you sacred.”

“No.”

Elena’s voice remained steady.

“It makes your choices visible.”

Victoria’s hand shook.

“You took everything.”

“I took nothing from you.”

“My father valued your child more than mine.”

“Your father valued keys.”

“Richard protected you.”

“Richard used me.”

“Marcus came for you.”

Elena understood.

This was the deepest wound.

Victoria’s father used her.

Cross used her.

Richard used her.

No one came simply because she was in pain.

“You deserved someone to come for you too,” Elena said.

Victoria’s eyes filled.

“Do not pity me.”

“I do not.”

“Then stop looking at me that way.”

“I am looking at someone who can still put the gun down.”

Footsteps sounded below.

Cross entered the tower.

He held Judge Wexler in front of him as a shield.

The judge’s face was gray with fear.

Cross looked at Victoria.

“Take the baby.”

Victoria did not move.

“Do it.”

“You said Julian was a failed prototype.”

“He is.”

“You said I was your partner.”

“You were useful.”

The final illusion broke.

Victoria lowered the gun.

Cross shot her.

The bullet struck her shoulder.

She fell against the wall.

Claire covered the baby.

Elena screamed.

Cross pushed Wexler aside and advanced.

Marcus reached the lower landing.

Cross aimed at Elena.

“Stop.”

Marcus stopped.

Richard appeared behind him.

The implant in his arm pulsed beneath the skin.

Cross smiled.

“The family is finally together.”

He ordered Richard forward.

Richard obeyed.

Cross scanned his arm with a handheld device.

The paternal certification activated.

“Now the child.”

Elena held out her empty hands.

“The baby is with Claire.”

Cross looked toward the upper shadows.

Claire had moved behind the clock mechanism.

Cross raised his weapon.

Marcus calculated the distance.

Too far.

Richard saw the calculation.

He stepped between Cross and the upper landing.

“What are you doing?” Cross asked.

Richard looked at Elena.

For once, he did not ask to be forgiven.

He did not claim love.

He simply made a choice without knowing what it would purchase.

“Ending the plan.”

He tore at the implant beneath his skin with the broken edge of his handcuff.

Cross fired.

The shot struck Richard in the chest.

Elena screamed his name.

Richard fell.

Marcus crossed the landing before Cross fired again.

They hit the tower wall.

The weapon slid through the railing.

Cross drove Marcus backward.

The old clock gears turned beside them.

Cross reached for a maintenance lever.

Marcus caught his arm.

“You cannot stop the protocol,” Cross said.

“Richard’s marker transmitted.”

“The baby’s marker is already in the system.”

“It is finished.”

Marcus looked toward Elena.

She knelt beside Richard.

Blood spread beneath his shirt.

Richard struggled to breathe.

“Tell her,” he whispered.

“Tell her I knew.”

Marcus did not understand.

Richard pointed weakly toward Wexler.

“The judge.”

Wexler tried to crawl away.

Richard continued.

“He signed the hospital substitution order.”

Naomi reached the tower with agents.

She secured Wexler.

Cross lunged toward the open clock balcony.

Marcus caught him.

For one second, Cross hung beyond the railing.

The city lights glowed far below.

Cross looked up.

“You saved Richard at the bank.”

Marcus held his wrist.

“You will save me too.”

“Yes.”

Cross smiled.

“Still sentimental.”

Marcus pulled him onto the platform.

“No.”

Agents restrained Cross.

“I want you alive when every child’s name is read into the record.”

Dr. Reed’s emergency team reached Richard.

The bullet had missed his heart but damaged a lung.

They carried him toward surgery.

Elena watched the stretcher disappear.

She did not know whether she wanted him to live for justice, for the child, or because some part of her still remembered the man he pretended to be.

Claire handed baby Claire back to her.

The child was unharmed.

Elias called from the command room.

“The heir protocol activated.”

Marcus looked at Cross.

Cross smiled through his restraints.

“The accounts are mine.”

Elias continued.

“Not exactly.”

Elena’s distributed system had been uploaded during the Haven meeting.

The activation triggered its final release.

Every survivor account separated automatically.

The central heir protocol deleted itself.

No one controlled the network.

Not Cross.

Not Haven.

Not Marcus.

Not the baby.

Cross’s smile disappeared.

Anna’s final safeguard had not waited for a chosen heir.

It had waited for someone to refuse ownership.

Elena had done that.

Naomi received a report from the nursery floor.

The baby’s identification record was secure.

Then an alarm sounded through the hospital system connected to the court’s emergency medical network.

A nurse’s voice came through.

“Code Pink.”

Marcus froze.

Code Pink meant an infant was missing.

Elena looked down.

Baby Claire was in her arms.

The nurse repeated the alert.

The missing infant was registered under Elena Vance Carrington’s name.

A second baby.

The substitute child from the mountain clinic had been moved into the city hospital during the blackout.

Someone was preparing to take that child and leave Elena’s identity attached.

Marcus looked at Claire.

“Mara Ellis’s baby.”

Naomi checked the tracking system.

The infant’s bracelet was moving toward the underground loading dock.

Cross laughed again.

“You dismantled the accounts.”

“But the identity market will survive.”

The maintenance worker who escaped earlier had the baby.

May you like

The courthouse lockdown had been a diversion.

The final abduction was already underway.
