Chapter 1 — The First Lie

The officer knelt beside Lily as paramedics loaded her onto the stretcher.

"Who found the child?"

"I did," I answered, my voice shaking.

He nodded, then looked toward my parents' porch.

"And who put her in the dumpster?"

Silence.

My mother folded her arms.

"No one."

"She must have climbed in herself."

The officer slowly looked at the commercial dumpster towering over six feet high.

Then at four-year-old Lily.

Then back at my mother.

"Ma'am..."

"You expect me to believe this child climbed into a locked commercial dumpster by herself?"

Vanessa stepped forward.

"Children wander."

Marcus spoke before I could.

"She was buried under trash."

The officer's expression hardened.

Another detective arrived carrying a camera.

He photographed everything.

The broken trash bags.

The tiny silver bracelet.

The scrape marks on the dumpster lid.

Then he quietly asked the paramedics,

"Anything unusual?"

One of them answered without looking up.

"Possible sedative exposure."

The detective immediately turned back toward my family.

"What medications are kept in this house?"

No one answered.
