Chapter 3 — What the Cameras Recorded
My parents had forgotten one thing.
The catering company across the street maintained exterior security cameras.
Detectives reviewed six hours of footage.
At 6:31 a.m., the video showed Vanessa carrying a large black trash bag toward the dumpsters.
The bag moved.
She looked around.
Then carefully lifted the dumpster lid.
Moments later, she returned without the bag.
Five minutes afterward...
My mother walked outside carrying another garbage bag.
She tossed it into the same dumpster.
Directly on top.
Neither woman checked inside afterward.
Neither looked back.
When detectives played the footage during questioning, the room became silent.
My father lowered his head.
