Months later, the criminal trial ended.
Vanessa pleaded guilty to charges including child endangerment and administering medication to a child without authorization.
My parents admitted they had concealed what happened instead of immediately seeking help.
The judge spoke quietly before sentencing.
"The greatest responsibility any adult has is protecting a child."
"You chose convenience instead."
After the trial, Marcus and I moved away.
Far away.
We bought a small house with a blue front door and a swing hanging beneath an old maple tree.
No catering business.
No family expectations.
No birthdays filled with fear.
Only peace.
On Lily's fifth birthday, she helped frost her own cake.
She looked at me and smiled.
"Mommy..."
"This birthday feels happy."
