Chapter 2: Echoes and Sirens

Total chaos erupted within the quiet walls of the estate. The horrified gasps of the extended family members morphed into frantic whispers and the frantic dialing of cell phones. Eleanor, suddenly realizing the gravity of what she had done, began to scramble backward away from the heavy oak railing.
"It was a misstep! Her shoe caught the runner! You all saw her trip!" Eleanor shrieked, her voice shrill and trembling as she tried to reconstruct her composed facade.
Julian didn't even dignify her panic with a glance. He carefully scooped Sarah up, his chest heaving, and carried her to the plush velvet sofa in the drawing room. He knelt beside her, his hands hovering anxiously over her body. "Sarah, look at me. Are you in pain? Is the baby..." His voice, usually so steady and commanding in the boardroom, cracked with a raw, bleeding vulnerability that Sarah hadn't heard since they first met.
"I... I don't feel any cramping," Sarah whispered, her fingers digging into his starched white collar as she tried to catch her breath. "Just terrified."

The distant wail of police sirens pierced the tense silence of the room, growing rapidly louder as they sped up the long, winding driveway. Within minutes, the heavy front doors burst open. Paramedics rushed in with a stretcher, followed closely by armed state troopers. As the medics gently transferred Sarah, Julian stood up and pointed a rigid, unyielding finger at the woman who had raised him.
"Arrest her," Julian stated coldly. "For the attempted murder of my wife and child."
