Chapter 3: The Antiseptic Sanctuary

The rhythmic, steady thump-thump-thump of the fetal heart monitor was the most beautiful symphony Sarah had ever heard. Lying in the stark, aggressively white hospital room, the scent of iodine and clean linens grounding her, she finally allowed a solitary tear of relief to slip down her cheek. The obstetrician had run every test imaginable; by an absolute miracle, the placenta was intact, and their daughter was perfectly fine.
Julian sat in the stiff plastic chair beside her bed. He hadn't let go of her hand for three hours. His knuckles were white, and his normally perfectly styled hair was a disheveled mess from running his hands through it.
"I never should have let you go back to that toxic house alone," Julian murmured, resting his forehead against the back of her hand. "I should have been there."

"I only went back for the vintage leather suitcase in the guest room," Sarah replied softly, her voice raspy. "My grandmother's silver locket was tucked in the side pocket. I couldn't bear to leave it behind after the lawyers drew up the divorce papers."
Julian lifted his head, his dark eyes swimming with a mixture of immense regret and sudden fierce determination. "I haven't signed those papers, Sarah. And after seeing how close I came to losing everything that actually matters today... I am tearing them up. I let her poison my mind with lies about you. I will spend the rest of my life making it right."
