Chapter 4: The Hidden Lining

While Sarah slept a dreamless, exhausted sleep under the watchful eye of the nurses, the police had cordoned off the estate and retrieved the belongings from the guest room, including the leather suitcase. Knowing Julian needed to retrieve Sarah's locket, the lead detective brought it to the hospital waiting room later that evening.
Julian placed the heavy bag on the waiting room table and unzipped it. But as he reached for the side pocket, he noticed something bizarre. The thick, silk lining at the bottom of the suitcase had been violently slashed open—a fresh, jagged tear likely made by Eleanor in her frantic struggle with Sarah before the fall.

Curious, Julian reached into the gap. His fingers brushed against a stack of heavy manila envelopes. He pulled them out, his brow furrowing as he broke the seals. Inside were not old family recipes or trinkets. There were dense, highly detailed financial ledgers, offshore bank statements from the Cayman Islands, and property deeds bearing forged signatures.
The pieces slammed together in his mind. "My God," Julian whispered to the empty room. Eleanor hadn't been fighting Sarah over an ultrasound photo. She had hidden her dark secrets in an old, unused suitcase in the guest room. She panicked when she realized Sarah was leaving the house with the evidence of a massive, decade-long embezzlement scheme against the family trust. She had tried to kill her to bury the truth.
