Chapter Eleven: The Trial Begins

Four months after the attack, Isabella Rossi entered the courtroom wearing a pale gray suit.

Her crimson gowns were gone.

Her diamonds were gone.

Her confidence was not.

Khloe entered through a private side door.

Her daughter, Grace Evelyn Thorne, had been born six weeks earlier.

Small but healthy.

Khloe had spent the final months of pregnancy under constant medical supervision. Marcus attended every appointment she allowed and slept in the guest room after she returned home.

They were still married.

They were still uncertain.

But they were no longer pretending.

The prosecution played the hospital security footage for the jury.

Several jurors looked away during the kick.

The audio recording followed.

Isabella’s voice filled the courtroom.

Smile for the cameras. Give him an heir. Then disappear.

Her attorney argued that the confrontation had been emotionally charged and that Isabella had reacted impulsively after months of mixed signals from Marcus.

Marcus testified for the prosecution.

“Did you have a romantic relationship with Ms. Rossi?” the prosecutor asked.

“No.”

“Did you know she wanted one?”

“Yes.”

“Did you discourage her?”

“Not clearly enough.”

Isabella watched him.

For the first time, uncertainty entered her expression.

The prosecutor continued.

“Why not?”

“Because her attention was useful to my business negotiations.”

“Did your wife object?”

“Yes.”

“And you ignored those objections?”

“Yes.”

The defense attorney stood for cross-examination.

“So you admit that you encouraged my client emotionally.”

“I admit that I exploited her interest.”

“And now you are blaming her for believing you cared?”

“No. I am blaming her for assaulting my wife.”

The attorney walked closer.

“Would this attack have happened if you had behaved honorably?”

Marcus looked toward Khloe.

“Possibly not.”

A murmur passed through the courtroom.

The defense attorney smiled.

“So you share responsibility.”

“For the environment, yes. For her actions, no.”

The smile disappeared.

When Khloe testified, the courtroom became completely silent.

She did not dramatize the attack.

She did not insult Isabella.

She described the months of humiliation, the confrontation, the shove, and the fear that her child might die.

The defense attorney suggested Khloe had exaggerated Isabella’s obsession because her marriage was already failing.

Khloe looked directly at the jury.

“My marriage was in trouble because my husband failed to protect its boundaries. That does not give another person permission to attack me.”

Isabella lowered her eyes.

For the first time, she appeared to understand that Khloe would not be destroyed by public humiliation.

She had survived it.

And she had returned stronger.
