Chapter Four: The Lie Beneath the Marriage

Khloe awakened shortly after midnight.

The suite around her had changed.

The marble table was gone. The broken glass had been cleaned. She was now in a protected maternal-care room with soft lighting and a nurse stationed outside.

Her mother, Evelyn Hale, sat beside the bed.

Evelyn had once served as a federal judge. Retirement had not softened her posture or her ability to make powerful people uncomfortable with a single look.

When Khloe opened her eyes, Evelyn took her hand.

“The baby?”

“Stable.”

Khloe exhaled.

Only then did she allow herself to cry.

Evelyn leaned closer but did not tell her to stop. She let her daughter release the terror she had been holding since she hit the floor.

After several minutes, Khloe whispered, “Where is Marcus?”

“In the family waiting room.”

“He hasn’t left?”

“No.”

Khloe stared toward the darkened window.

“I don’t know whether that makes me feel better.”

Evelyn understood.

“Did he have an affair with Isabella?”

“No.”

“You sound certain.”

“Because he would have admitted it by now.”

“That does not mean he was innocent.”

Khloe closed her eyes.

For months, Isabella had appeared everywhere.

At business dinners.

Foundation events.

Private receptions.

She touched Marcus’s arm when she laughed. She interrupted Khloe whenever she spoke. She spread rumors that the Thorne marriage existed only to produce an heir.

Marcus always dismissed it as harmless jealousy.

He told Khloe that Isabella’s father controlled several European investment partnerships Thorne Global needed for an acquisition.

He asked for patience.

He asked for appearances.

He asked his wife to tolerate humiliation so his company could avoid conflict.

“He chose business over me,” Khloe said.

Evelyn did not disagree.

A soft knock came from the door.

Marcus stood outside.

He looked nothing like the billionaire whose photograph appeared on magazine covers.

His tuxedo jacket was gone. His white shirt was wrinkled. There were dark circles beneath his eyes.

Evelyn rose.

“She decides whether you enter.”

Marcus looked at Khloe.

Khloe hesitated before nodding.

Evelyn left them alone.

Marcus approached the bed but did not sit.

“I failed you.”

Khloe looked away.

“Yes.”

The word landed between them without mercy.

Marcus swallowed.

“I never had a relationship with Isabella.”

“You allowed her to act as if she did.”

“I thought I could control the situation.”

“You thought I would continue accepting it.”

He lowered his head.

Khloe’s voice remained weak but steady.

“You watched her insult me. You let her appear beside you in photographs. You kept inviting her into our lives because her father had money you wanted.”

“The acquisition protects thousands of jobs.”

“And what protected me?”

Marcus had no answer.

Khloe looked at him again.

“She believed she could kick your pregnant wife and then lie to your face. Ask yourself what you did to make her believe that.”

Marcus stepped back as though she had struck him.

Khloe’s hand moved to her stomach.

“I need peace. Not promises. Not revenge. Peace.”

He nodded slowly.

“I’ll give you anything you need.”

“Then leave the room.”

Marcus stood there for one final second.

Then he obeyed.
