Chapter 18 - THE TRIAL
Scarlett’s trial began eight months later.
Lily was healthy enough to remain at home with a nurse.
Doctors found no evidence of permanent damage from the sedative.
She was smaller than other babies her age.
She was also loud, curious, and determined.
Mia called those qualities proof of survival.
Scarlett entered the courtroom wearing a plain dark suit.
The confident woman from the Golden Foyer was gone.
Her attorneys argued that Victor had manipulated her since adolescence.
They said she suffered emotional abuse.
They said she never intended to kill Mia or Lily.
Mia believed part of it.
Victor had manipulated Scarlett.
He had encouraged her resentment.
He had used her desire for approval.
But manipulation did not erase choice.
Scarlett had chosen to strike Mia.
She had chosen to push her.
She had chosen to abduct Lily.
She had chosen to inject a premature infant with a sedative.
When Mia testified, Scarlett stared at the table.
The prosecutor displayed the foyer video.
The courtroom watched Mia collapse again.
Scarlett’s voice came through the speakers.
“You should pray that baby is strong.”
Mia refused to look away.
The prosecutor asked one final question.
“Mrs. Vale, what did the defendant take from you that night?”
Mia thought carefully.
“She took the final weeks of my pregnancy.”
“She took my daughter’s safe birth.”
“She took my ability to feel secure inside my own home.”
“But she did not take my family.”
“She did not take my voice.”
“And she did not take the truth.”
Scarlett cried during the verdict.
Guilty on every major charge.
At sentencing, she asked to speak.
She turned toward Noah.
“I hated Mia because she saw me clearly.”
“She saw that I was pretending to be powerful while Victor controlled every decision.”
“I thought destroying her would make me important again.”
She looked toward Mia.
“I am sorry.”
Mia remained silent.
An apology could be real and still arrive too late.
The judge sentenced Scarlett to twenty-two years in prison.
Victor received life imprisonment for murder, attempted murder, kidnapping, financial conspiracy, and the sabotage of Alexander Vale’s plane.
William Hawthorne received thirty years.
Arthur Crane received eighteen.
The Golden Foyer attack had lasted less than one minute.
Its consequences dismantled a conspiracy that had survived for nearly a decade.
Outside the courthouse, reporters surrounded Noah and Mia.
Mia made only one statement.
“Being sorry after the evidence appears is not the same as choosing not to cause harm.”
