Chapter 3: The Woman No One Remembered

While investigators searched the Mercer estate, an elderly woman quietly entered the ballroom.

Most guests assumed she was confused.

She wore a simple navy coat and carried a weathered leather handbag.

Douglas Mercer recognized her instantly.

His knees nearly gave out.

"Lillian..."

She had been the night nurse at the retirement home.

Everyone believed she had disappeared after the fire.

Instead, she had spent ten years in witness protection.

Lillian placed a faded photograph on the evidence table.

It showed Caroline standing beside her only minutes before the fire.

On the back was a handwritten note.

If anything happens to me, trust Lillian.

With steady hands, Lillian told investigators exactly what she had seen.

The fire had not started by accident.

Someone had disabled the alarm system.

Someone had locked emergency exits.

Someone had expected Caroline to die.

She looked directly at Juliette.

"I watched your sister beg you to unlock that door."

"You looked at her..."

"...and walked away."

Juliette burst into tears.

"It wasn't supposed to happen like that!"

The words escaped before she realized what she had admitted.

The courtroom confession she had tried to avoid had happened in front of four hundred wedding guests.

Every camera in the ballroom was still recording.
