Chapter 1 – The Balcony

The little girl was barely conscious by the time Ethan Bennett pushed open the heavy glass door.
Eight-year-old Lily collapsed into his arms, her tiny fingers so cold they barely clung to his shirt.
"Daddy..." she whispered through trembling lips.
"I've got you. You're safe."
Without hesitation, Ethan ripped off his white dinner jacket and wrapped it tightly around his daughter. His hands shook as he rubbed warmth back into her arms.
"Call an ambulance!" he shouted.
The wedding coordinator froze.
The orchestra stopped.
Guests abandoned their champagne flutes and rushed toward the hallway.
Standing several feet away, bride-to-be Vanessa Collins remained perfectly calm.
"Oh, honestly," she sighed. "She wasn't dying."
Every head turned.
"What did you just say?" Ethan asked.
Vanessa folded her arms.
"I simply needed her out of the way."
Lily buried her face against her father's shoulder.
"She locked me outside..."
Her tiny voice broke.
"...she said if I ruined her wedding she'd make sure Daddy never loved me again."
Silence.
Absolute silence.
Even the violinists lowered their instruments.
Vanessa shrugged.
"Children exaggerate."
But several guests exchanged horrified looks.
One elderly woman quietly muttered,
"I heard the child screaming nearly fifteen minutes ago."
Another added,
"I thought someone would help."
Ethan slowly stood, still carrying Lily.
His face had become frighteningly calm.
"You locked my daughter outside."
"I disciplined her."
"You threatened her."
"I corrected her."
The wedding planner whispered,
"Oh my God..."
Because everyone knew something had just shattered.
May you like
Not the wedding.
The groom.
