Chapter 13 - The Deadline

Evelyn’s recording lasted eleven minutes.

For the first two, nobody moved.

Khloe watched the mother she had lost speak from another lifetime.

“Conrad Thorne believes ownership means control.”

Evelyn’s recorded voice remained steady.

“But he has hidden ownership inside family trusts for years.”

She explained that Vesper Holdings had been created using Margaret’s marriage trust without her meaningful consent.

Vesper then funded shell companies.

Those companies accumulated early positions in medical-data firms that would eventually become Atlas BioSystems.

But that was not the worst part.

Evelyn looked directly into the camera.

“Conrad intends to use Marcus someday as the clean face of these investments.”

Marcus sat down slowly.

The video continued.

“He may not tell his son.”

“He may not need to.”

“If Marcus inherits voting control without understanding the structure, the liabilities transfer with the authority.”

Khloe understood.

Conrad had not merely built an empire.

He had built a future scapegoat.

His own son.

Marcus whispered.

“He was going to leave it to me.”

Gabriel nodded.

“Along with the legal exposure.”

Margaret covered her mouth.

Evelyn continued.

“Lorenzo believes Conrad is preparing Atlas for an acquisition that could consolidate these holdings.”

Twelve years earlier.

The plan had been waiting that long.

Then Evelyn said something unexpected.

“If my daughter ever holds enough voting power to stop it, Conrad will consider her an obstacle.”

The video ended.

Nobody spoke.

Finally, Khloe looked at Marcus.

“Monday.”

The Atlas board vote was in three days.

Marcus immediately called his legal team.

Gabriel called federal counsel.

Margaret agreed to provide access to her marriage trust.

For the first time, the investigation moved faster than Conrad’s plan.

Then the public scandal began.

At 6:45 the next morning, a video appeared online.

It showed Marcus entering Khloe’s hospital suite.

It showed Khloe on the floor.

It showed Isabella crying.

The edited clip excluded the attack.

Within minutes, headlines spread.

Khloe stared at her phone.

“They leaked it.”

Marcus looked furious.

“They’re trying to control the story.”

Gabriel entered.

“It’s worse.”

He handed Khloe a tablet.

Thorne Strategic Holdings had announced an emergency board session.

Sunday evening.

Twenty-four hours before the scheduled Atlas vote.

Marcus read the agenda.

His face changed.

“They’re removing me as chief executive.”

Khloe looked at him.

“Who filed the motion?”

Marcus already knew.

“Conrad.”

Gabriel shook his head.

“That’s not the dangerous part.”

He pointed to the second item.

TEMPORARY ACTIVATION OF CONTINGENCY VOTING AUTHORITY RELATING TO K. THORNE SHARES.

Khloe stared.

“They’re declaring me incapacitated.”

Gabriel nodded.

“They filed the medical petition an hour ago.”

Khloe rose slowly from the chair.

“I’m standing right here.”

“Conrad doesn’t need it to survive long.”

Marcus looked at the clock.

May you like

“He needs it to survive until the Atlas vote.”

They now had less than thirty-six hours to stop him.
