Chapter 20 - What the Camera Could Not See

Six weeks later, Conrad Thorne no longer controlled Thorne Strategic Holdings.

The board removed him unanimously.

Edward Vance resigned from Atlas BioSystems before federal authorities froze several accounts connected to Vesper and Northstar.

Dr. Pierce admitted he had been paid to exaggerate Khloe’s medical condition.

Rachel Morrow admitted Silas Reed had recruited her months before the gala.

The Atlas acquisition collapsed.

The hidden voting clause in Khloe’s marriage agreement was voided.

Conrad publicly denied ordering physical harm against Khloe.

Investigators continued examining whether his instructions to Isabella crossed criminal lines beyond the financial conspiracy.

Isabella accepted responsibility for attacking Khloe.

She did not escape consequences.

But her cooperation exposed records that would otherwise have remained hidden for years.

She also surrendered the remaining copies of her father’s ledger.

Marcus resigned temporarily as chief executive.

Not because Conrad demanded it.

Because Marcus chose it.

He told the board he would not lead again until every company connected to his family underwent independent review.

Khloe did not forgive him overnight.

She did not pretend deleted messages and hidden history no longer mattered.

Trust returned slowly.

In actions.

In uncomfortable conversations.

In Marcus answering questions even when the answers made him look weak.

Three months later, Khloe stood inside the nursery of their Manhattan home.

Marcus was beside her.

Her pregnancy remained healthy.

The room was quiet.

A small wooden crib waited beneath the window.

Marcus looked at her.

“I still don’t know whether you’re staying because you love me or because you haven’t decided to leave.”

Khloe almost smiled.

“Maybe both.”

“I can live with that.”

“You’ll have to.”

He nodded.

Then Khloe took his hand and placed it against her stomach.

Their baby moved.

Marcus laughed softly.

For one brief moment, there were no corporations.

No cameras.

No boardrooms.

No fathers.

No lies.

Just them.

Gabriel called twenty minutes later.

Khloe answered immediately.

“Did you find her?”

Silence.

Then Gabriel spoke.

“We found the Zurich apartment.”

Khloe gripped the phone.

“And?”

“Empty.”

Her hope fell.

“But someone had been living there recently.”

“Silas?”

“We don’t think so.”

Khloe looked at Marcus.

“What did you find?”

Gabriel hesitated.

“A photograph.”

“Of my mother?”

“No.”

“A photograph of you.”

Khloe stopped breathing.

“What?”

“It was taken four days ago.”

Marcus moved closer.

Gabriel continued.

“You were leaving your doctor’s appointment.”

Khloe looked toward the windows instinctively.

Someone had been watching her.

“Who had the picture?”

“It was sitting on the apartment table.”

“Anything else?”

“A sealed envelope.”

Khloe’s voice barely worked.

“What does it say?”

Gabriel read the handwriting.

FOR KHLOE ONLY.

The next morning, Gabriel delivered the envelope personally.

Khloe sat at the dining table with Marcus beside her.

She opened it.

Inside was one sheet of paper.

No explanation.

No address.

Only a message written in handwriting she remembered from birthday cards, school lunches, and bedtime notes.

My beautiful girl.

I know what happened in Suite 14.

I know Isabella attacked you.

I know Conrad has finally been exposed.

But Conrad was never the person I was hiding from.

Khloe stopped reading.

Marcus watched her face.

“What does it say?”

She continued.

The person who created Vesper Holdings is still free.

The person who ordered Silas to watch you is still free.

And the person who gave Isabella access to your hospital room was not Conrad.

Khloe’s hands started trembling.

There was one final paragraph.

Do not trust the story the cameras showed you.

The attack began before Isabella entered the room.

If you want the truth, find the second camera.

Khloe looked up.

“The second camera?”

Marcus frowned.

“There was only one camera in Suite 14.”

Gabriel’s face changed.

“No.”

Khloe looked at him.

“What?”

Gabriel slowly reached for his phone.

“The hospital renovated those suites five years ago.”

He opened the original architectural security plans.

Suite 14 appeared on the screen.

One camera above the door.

And another hidden inside the smoke-detection system.

Marcus stared at it.

“Why wasn’t that footage reviewed?”

Gabriel called hospital security.

No answer.

He called the server administrator.

No answer.

Then his phone received an automated alert.

ARCHIVE ACCESS DETECTED.

SUITE 14 SECONDARY CAMERA.

REMOTE DOWNLOAD COMPLETE.

Khloe stared at the message.

“Someone just took the footage.”

Marcus moved toward the windows.

“From where?”

Gabriel opened the access log.

The location appeared.

Not Zurich.

Not Conrad’s house.

Not Atlas headquarters.

The download had come from inside New York.

From a private residence registered to someone whose name made Gabriel go completely still.

Khloe looked at him.

“Who?”

Gabriel slowly raised his eyes.

Before he could answer, the doorbell rang.

Marcus checked the security monitor.

A woman stood outside.

Silver coat.

Dark glasses.

A familiar necklace around her throat.

Khloe stopped breathing.

The woman looked directly into the camera.

Then she removed her glasses.

Twelve years disappeared in a single second.

Khloe whispered one word.

“Mom.”

May you like

And Evelyn Ashford smiled.
