Chapter 16 - The Photograph on the Desk

Khloe refused to watch from a hospital room.

At 5:05 p.m., against Gabriel’s preference but with medical clearance, she left through a private entrance.

By 5:42, she entered Ashford Tower across the street from Thorne headquarters.

A secure video feed showed the emergency board session.

Marcus sat at one end.

Conrad sat at the other.

Twelve directors filled the table.

Conrad spoke first.

“My son has allowed personal matters to compromise leadership.”

Marcus said nothing.

Conrad continued.

“The Atlas acquisition cannot be jeopardized by marital instability.”

Khloe felt anger rise.

Then she noticed something behind Conrad.

A framed photograph on a cabinet.

The camera angle was imperfect.

But the image looked familiar.

Khloe moved closer to the monitor.

“Zoom in.”

A technician enlarged it.

The photograph showed Conrad shaking hands with another man.

Lorenzo Rossi.

Gabriel frowned.

“That picture was taken at the Vesper launch.”

Khloe turned toward him.

“What Vesper launch?”

Gabriel looked confused.

“There was no public launch.”

Khloe stared at the photograph again.

Then she remembered her mother’s letter.

Do not assume the person who appears most powerful is the person in control.

Conrad answers to someone.

She looked at the date engraved on the frame.

Twenty-nine years earlier.

The same year Margaret’s marriage trust created Vesper Holdings.

Khloe suddenly understood.

“Conrad didn’t create Vesper.”

Gabriel looked at her.

“What?”

“He used Margaret’s trust.”

“But someone else structured it.”

She searched the archived documents again.

One signature appeared repeatedly as outside counsel.

EDWARD M. VANCE.

Khloe froze.

She knew the name.

Everyone in American finance did.

Edward Vance had served as Conrad’s attorney for decades.

He was also chairman of Atlas BioSystems.

Gabriel whispered.

“My God.”

The Atlas acquisition was not Conrad buying an outside company.

It was Conrad consolidating a structure built by his own longtime attorney.

Khloe immediately called Marcus.

This time he answered.

“Khloe?”

“Don’t vote.”

“I wasn’t going to.”

“Listen to me.”

She explained the Vance connection.

Marcus remained silent for several seconds.

Then he looked across the boardroom.

Edward Vance sat three seats from Conrad.

Watching him.

Marcus finally understood why his father always appeared confident.

Conrad was powerful.

But Vance had designed the machine.

Marcus stood.

The directors turned toward him.

Conrad frowned.

“Sit down.”

Marcus ignored him.

“I request an immediate disclosure of every beneficial interest held by Edward Vance in Atlas BioSystems.”

The room changed.

Vance smiled.

For the first time.

A calm, almost amused smile.

“Careful, Marcus.”

Marcus stared at him.

“Why?”

Vance folded his hands.

“Because your father isn’t the person you should be afraid of.”

Khloe heard the sentence through the live feed.

Then the video went black.

Someone had cut the building’s internal transmission.
