Chapter 2 – The Knock That Changed Everything

The heavy footsteps stopped outside the apartment.

Three firm knocks echoed through the hallway.

Before Ryan could react, the front door opened.

Two Chicago police detectives stepped inside, followed by an Army Criminal Investigation Division officer who had accompanied Colonel James Bennett after he voiced concerns about his daughter's sudden silence.

James never took his eyes off Ryan.

"I asked them to wait downstairs."

"I prayed I wouldn't need them."

His voice trembled—not with fear, but with heartbreak.

"I was wrong."

The detectives looked toward the bed.

Emily instinctively tried to pull the blanket back over herself.

"No," James whispered gently.

"You never have to hide again."

One detective carefully photographed the bruises while a female paramedic examined Emily.

The dark fingerprint beside her swollen stomach made everyone in the room fall silent.

Ryan finally spoke.

"She bruises easily."

Linda nodded quickly.

"Pregnancy makes women emotional. She exaggerates everything."

The female detective slowly turned toward them.

"Bruises don't form fingerprints by themselves."

Ryan took a step backward.

James stepped forward.

For the first time in Emily's life, she saw something she had never witnessed before.

Her father—the decorated Army colonel who had remained calm under enemy fire—had tears in his eyes.

"I trusted you with my daughter," he said.

"And you turned her home into a battlefield."

The detectives placed Ryan and Linda in handcuffs.

As they were escorted out, Ryan shouted toward Emily.

"You'll ruin all our lives!"

Emily looked at him through silent tears.

"No."

"You ruined your own."
