Chapter 3 – The Journal Beneath the Floorboards

Emily was admitted to the hospital for observation.
Doctors confirmed that although she had suffered repeated physical abuse, her baby was still fighting.
While surgeons and nurses cared for Emily, detectives searched the apartment under a warrant.
Everything looked ordinary.
Until an investigator noticed that one floorboard beneath the nursery rocking chair had recently been replaced.
Hidden underneath was a small metal box.
Inside were hospital reports Emily had secretly collected.
Photographs of bruises.
Voice recordings.
And a leather journal.
Every page carried a date.
Every page described another assault.
Another apology.
Another promise from Ryan that it would never happen again.
Near the back was one final envelope addressed simply:
For Dad.
James opened it with trembling hands.
Dad, if you're reading this, it means I wasn't brave enough to tell you myself.
I kept believing Ryan would change.
I stayed because I wanted my baby to have a family.
If anything happens to me, promise me one thing.
Please don't let my child grow up believing that fear is what love looks like.
James quietly folded the letter.
Then looked at Detective Collins.
"We're finishing this."

The recordings also captured Linda encouraging Ryan to isolate Emily from her father and convincing neighbors that Emily's injuries were caused by pregnancy complications.
The case transformed overnight from suspected domestic violence into a carefully documented pattern of abuse and coercive control.
