Chapter 4 – A Soldier's Oath

Three months later, Emily gave birth to a healthy baby girl.
She named her Grace.
James held his granddaughter in his arms before walking into the courthouse for Ryan's trial.
The courtroom remained silent as prosecutors played the recordings.
Jurors listened to Ryan's threats.
They heard Linda mocking Emily while she cried.
They saw photographs documenting months of abuse.
Ryan finally stood to address the court.
"I never meant to hurt her."
Emily calmly looked at him.
"You didn't hurt me once."
"You chose to hurt me over and over again."
James was the final witness.
He stood in full Army dress uniform.
"I've spent my career teaching soldiers that courage means protecting the people beside you."
He turned toward Ryan.
"You confused control with strength."
"They are not the same."
After less than four hours of deliberation, the jury returned unanimous guilty verdicts.
Ryan was sentenced to a lengthy prison term.
