The two boys quickly pulled apart as the door burst open.
Standing in the doorway was a middle-aged woman wearing a thick winter coat. Her eyes widened when she saw the younger boy sitting on the cold pavement, holding a half-eaten sandwich.
“Ethan?” she gasped.

“M-Mrs. Carter?”

“I didn't want to go back,” he whispered. “Nobody wanted me.”
Mrs. Carter gently held his face.

“Who?” Ethan asked.
Mrs. Carter smiled through tears.
“Your grandmother.”
