Chapter 1 - The Man in the Hallway

I stared at the frozen image on my phone.

The stranger beside Chloe looked to be in his late forties, dressed in a charcoal suit, with a leather folder tucked beneath one arm.

My mother sat behind him in the dining room.

Her shoulders were hunched.

Her hands were locked together in her lap.

Even through a grainy security recording, I could see fear on her face.

“Who is he?”

Chloe’s eyes flicked toward the front door.

That tiny movement told me more than any answer could have.

She was thinking about running.

I stepped between her and the hallway.

“Don’t.”

Chloe folded her arms.

“You’re being ridiculous, Ethan.”

Maya pressed a dish towel against the cut above her eyebrow.

“Tell him what was in the folder.”

Chloe spun toward her.

“You shut your mouth.”

My mother flinched.

That was the moment something inside me changed.

For six years, I had trusted the woman standing in front of me.

I had married her.

Shared my accounts with her.

Put her name on emergency documents.

Left her alone with the person who had raised me.

And my mother was now afraid to breathe when Chloe raised her voice.

I crouched beside Mom.

“What did he want from you?”

Her fingers tightened around my sleeve.

“They wanted me to sign papers.”

“What papers?”

“I don’t know.”

Her voice cracked.

“She wouldn’t let me read them.”

Chloe laughed sharply.

“This is insane.”

Maya pointed toward the stairs.

“The blue sewing box.”

Chloe moved before I did.

She shoved past the coffee table and ran.

I caught her at the bottom of the staircase.

She twisted toward me.

“Get out of my way.”

“What’s in that box?”

“Nothing.”

“Then you shouldn’t care if I open it.”

For the first time, panic broke through her expression.

“Ethan, listen to me.”

I walked upstairs.

My mother’s sewing room had barely been touched since she moved into our house six months earlier.

The blue wooden box sat beneath the window.

I opened it.

Thread.

Needles.

Buttons.

Nothing unusual.

Then I noticed the velvet lining had lifted at one corner.

I pulled it back.

A false bottom came free.

Underneath were three envelopes, a flash drive, a cheap prepaid phone, and a document with my mother’s signature at the bottom.

The heading stopped me cold.

PETITION FOR EMERGENCY GUARDIANSHIP.

The petitioner’s name was Chloe Whitmore.

But the next page was worse.

It claimed my mother suffered from severe dementia.

It claimed she was violent.

It claimed she had repeatedly threatened Chloe.

And at the bottom was a statement identifying the primary witness.

Maya Torres.

I looked toward Maya.

Her face went white.

“I never signed anything.”

Then my mother whispered from behind me.

“There’s another page.”

I turned it over.

Attached to the petition was a proposed order giving Chloe temporary control over my mother’s medical care, finances, property, and legal decisions.

And beside the stranger’s signature was his printed name.

Caleb Voss, Attorney at Law.

My phone suddenly vibrated.

A security alert appeared across the screen.

ARCHIVED CAMERA ACCESS DETECTED.

Someone was trying to delete the footage.

And the login was coming from inside the house.
