Chapter 18 - The False Victory

Chloe was arrested.
Caleb was in custody.
Mason was safe.
Maya was safe.
The foundation money was secure.
And still we hadn’t won.
A server audit confirmed Chloe had transmitted the encrypted patent archive during our confrontation.
Destination unknown.
Without the authentication key, the files should have remained unreadable.
Should have.
Then Nathan found the problem.
Caleb had photographed portions of the encryption protocol years earlier.
Combined with enough computing power, the buyer might eventually crack it.
Chloe refused to identify the recipient.
Federal agents searched her devices.
Most were wiped.
One contained a single encrypted chat.
The buyer used the name Orion.
No company.
No location.
No identity.
Chloe smiled through every interrogation.
“You have me.”
She leaned back.
“But you don’t have what I sold.”
For two days, investigators chased digital trails.
Singapore.
Zurich.
Panama.
Toronto.
Every route dead-ended.
Then Mom asked to see the old files from my father’s safe-deposit box.
She read them slowly.
Halfway through, she stopped.
“Ethan.”
She pointed to a payment ledger from twelve years earlier.
One company appeared repeatedly.
Orion Clinical Ventures.
Nathan searched the name.
Dissolved eleven years ago.
Its registered director had been Samuel Keene.
The fake doctor.
Keene had disappeared as soon as the investigation began.
Police had assumed he was fleeing.
Maybe he was collecting the patents.
Bennett issued an international alert.
Airport systems flagged Keene’s passport.
He had booked a flight to Montreal leaving that evening.
Agents arrested him at the gate.
His laptop contained the patent archive.
Still encrypted.
No copy had yet been sent overseas.
Chloe’s final escape route collapsed.
Nathan called me from the airport.
“It’s over.”
I wanted to believe him.
Mom was discharged the next morning.
Maya came with us.
When we entered the house, Mom stopped beside the dent in the wall.
I thought she might cry.
Instead, she touched the damaged paint.
“Leave it.”
“Mom.”
“I mean it.”
She looked at Maya.
“Some things should be remembered.”
That afternoon, Chloe was formally charged with conspiracy, elder abuse, kidnapping, fraud, forgery, and multiple financial crimes.
Caleb faced many of the same charges.
Samuel Keene was charged separately.
For the first time, I slept more than three hours.
Then Nathan called at 6:20 the next morning.
“There’s something you need to see.”
He emailed me a document.
It was our prenuptial agreement.
Attached was a schedule of property disclosures.
One paragraph had been altered after I signed it.
The altered section claimed Chloe possessed a fifty-percent marital interest in any intellectual property I inherited during the marriage.
The notarization was false.
But the notary’s name was real.
Maya looked over my shoulder.
“Who is she?”
I stared at the signature.
I knew the name.
Rebecca Shaw.
May you like
Chloe’s current attorney.
