Chapter 17 - The Counterattack

Police wanted me outside the perimeter.

I agreed.

Then Chloe called.

“Come inside.”

I looked toward the abandoned terminal.

“You can see me?”

“Of course.”

“Let Mason go.”

“Bring the key.”

“The real one?”

“Yes.”

“What about Maya?”

“She stopped being useful.”

“She escaped.”

Silence.

For the first time, I heard genuine surprise.

I smiled.

“You’re not as far ahead as you think.”

Her voice hardened.

“Inside.”

Bennett fitted me with a transmitter.

The real authentication key remained with police.

I carried a replica.

The freight terminal smelled like rust and river water.

Old conveyor belts cut through the darkness.

Chloe stood near a control room.

Harold Mason sat behind her with his hands secured.

A laptop rested on a metal table.

“Throw me the key.”

“Release Harold.”

“Key first.”

“No.”

Her eyes narrowed.

“You finally learned.”

“From you.”

She stepped closer.

For years, I had known every expression on my wife’s face.

Or thought I had.

The woman before me looked familiar and completely foreign.

“Did you ever plan to stay married to me?”

“Originally?”

“No.”

“And later?”

Her eyes flickered.

“That became complicated.”

“You could have walked away.”

“Without the patents?”

“Without becoming your father.”

That landed.

Caleb had spent his life convincing Chloe that my family had ruined theirs.

But Chloe’s choices belonged to Chloe.

She had crossed lines Caleb had only suggested.

“You starved my mother.”

“She stood in my way.”

“You hurt Maya.”

“She wouldn’t cooperate.”

“You forged medical records.”

“I built a solution.”

“You call that a solution?”

“I call it survival.”

“No.”

I looked at her.

“You call greed survival because it sounds less ugly.”

Her face changed.

Then the laptop beeped.

A countdown appeared.

Four minutes until the foundation transfer released.

“Give me the key.”

I tossed the replica.

She inserted it.

Rejected.

Her head snapped toward me.

“What did you do?”

“Bought time.”

Police entered from both sides.

“Hands where we can see them.”

Chloe grabbed Mason and pulled him backward.

She held a small knife near his shoulder.

Nobody fired.

I stood still.

“Chloe.”

“Tell them to move.”

“It’s over.”

“It is not over.”

The calm mask finally shattered.

“This was supposed to be mine.”

“My father’s work?”

“My life.”

She was crying now.

Not with regret.

With rage.

“You had everything, Ethan.”

“And you had me.”

She stared at me.

“You had a husband who trusted you.”

Her breathing became uneven.

“A home.”

She looked toward the officers.

“A family.”

Something in her face flickered.

I continued.

“And you traded it for control.”

For one second, the knife lowered.

Mason moved.

Bennett rushed forward.

Officers seized Chloe before she could react.

The knife clattered onto concrete.

The laptop countdown reached zero.

Everyone froze.

Then the screen flashed.

TRANSFER FAILED.

Nathan had revoked Mason’s board credentials thirty seconds earlier.

Twenty-three million dollars stayed exactly where it belonged.

Chloe stared at the message.

Then she started laughing.

“You think that was the transfer?”

My stomach tightened.

“What did you do?”

She looked at me as officers handcuffed her.

“That countdown was a distraction.”

Her smile returned.

May you like

“The patent archive is already gone.”
