Chapter Eight: Vanessa’s Version

Vanessa entered the interview room wearing a county-issued uniform and no makeup.
Without designer clothes and practiced confidence, she looked younger.
But Harrison did not mistake vulnerability for innocence.
She sat across from him.
“I did not mean for her to fall,” she said.
“You meant to touch her.”
“Yes.”
“You threatened her baby.”
Vanessa lowered her eyes.
“I was angry.”
“You spent two years mocking her miscarriages.”
“Richard told me she was unstable.”
“You read her medical information.”
“Richard showed me.”
“You helped him move money.”
“I designed properties.”
“You created fake invoices.”
“My father told me what amounts to use.”
Harrison leaned back.
“Every person in this conspiracy has someone else to blame.”
Vanessa’s eyes flashed.
“You think I do not know what I did?”
“I think you are trying to reduce it.”
She looked toward the mirrored wall.
“My father has controlled me since I was a child. He chose my schools, my friends, my jobs. When I tried to leave his firm, he had my accounts frozen.”
“You were thirty years old.”
“You do not understand him.”
“Then help me understand.”
Vanessa told him about Judge Kensington’s network.
He had recorded officials accepting bribes.
He kept files on police chiefs, attorneys, and business owners.
Sebastian Vale funded everything, but Kensington maintained control through blackmail.
Vanessa had been instructed to date Richard.
The affair created leverage.
When she became pregnant by a former boyfriend, her father ordered her to claim Richard was the father.
“Who is the real father?” Harrison asked.
“A journalist named Caleb Ross.”
Harrison knew the name.
Ross had disappeared eight months earlier while investigating unsafe construction projects.
“Where is he?”
Vanessa began crying.
“I do not know.”
“Did your father harm him?”
“I think so.”
She explained that Caleb had discovered documents linking Vale developments to fatal structural failures.
He planned to publish them.
Vanessa warned her father.
Not because she wanted Caleb hurt, she claimed, but because she wanted protection.
Two days later, Caleb vanished.
Her father told her never to mention him again.
“Richard knew?” Harrison asked.
“Not at first. Later, he found one of Caleb’s files. That is why he started hiding records.”
“Not because he grew a conscience.”
“No. Because he wanted leverage against Vale.”
Vanessa then revealed the existence of a private archive beneath Judge Kensington’s country estate.
Every payoff.
Every recording.
Every hidden agreement.
The judge called it insurance.
“Why should anyone believe you?” Harrison asked.
“Because my father is already moving it.”
“How do you know?”
“He visited me this morning. He said he was leaving the country.”
“Did he threaten you?”
“He said women who embarrass powerful men do not live long enough to testify.”
Harrison stood.
“Then you will testify quickly.”
Vanessa looked at him.
“Will Khloe ever forgive me?”
“No.”
The answer landed with brutal clarity.
Harrison continued.
“Forgiveness is not part of your agreement. Truth is.”
That night, federal agents raided Judge Kensington’s estate.
The underground archive was empty.
But behind one filing cabinet, they found a bloodstained press credential.
The name printed on it was Caleb Ross.
The conspiracy had become more than financial fraud.

Someone had disappeared a journalist.
And Harrison believed Sebastian Vale knew exactly where he was.
