Chapter 14 - THE DEBT EMMA REFUSED

Emma recovered quickly.
Emotionally, she did not.
Nathan had lost control of Whitmore Global.
The headlines made sure she remembered it.
Billionaire Chooses Family Over Empire.
Emma hated every version of the story.
Nathan had not chosen her like a prize.
She had not asked him to sacrifice his company.
Yet the world turned her into the reason.
One afternoon she walked into Nathan’s rented house holding a newspaper.
He was washing bottles.
“You need to fix this.”
Nathan looked up.
“What?”
She threw the paper onto the table.
“This.”
He read the headline.
His expression tightened.
“I didn’t give them that.”
“But they’re saying it.”
“I can issue a statement.”
“Yes.”
Nathan dried his hands.
“What do you want it to say?”
“The truth.”
“What truth?”
“That I did not ask you to leave your company.”
“Done.”
“And that losing it does not buy you forgiveness.”
Nathan froze.
Emma’s voice shook.
“I cannot live with this hanging over me.”
“It isn’t.”
“It is.”
She pointed at the headline.
“Every time I look at you, I think about what you gave up.”
Nathan stepped closer.
Emma stepped back.
He stopped immediately.
“That’s exactly what I was afraid of.”
Nathan’s face fell.
“What?”
“Your sacrifice becomes another kind of pressure.”
Emma wiped her eyes.
“If I don’t take you back, I become the woman who let you lose everything and still walked away.”
Nathan looked stunned.
“I never wanted that.”
“I know.”
“Emma, listen to me.”
She looked at him.
“I did not stay at that hospital to earn you.”
“I stayed because leaving would have made me hate myself.”
Nathan’s voice cracked.
“I made the right decision for me.”
“You owe me nothing for it.”
Emma breathed unevenly.
“Nothing?”
“Nothing.”
“Not forgiveness?”
“No.”
“Not marriage?”
“No.”
“Not another chance?”
Nathan’s eyes filled.
“No.”
The answer hurt both of them.
But it also freed something.
Nathan issued a statement that afternoon.
It was five sentences.
No mention of romance.
No blame.
He said his board dispute reflected long-standing disagreements about leadership expectations.
He stated clearly that Emma had never asked him to resign or compromise his company.
He accepted responsibility for his own decisions.
Then he disappeared from the news cycle.
A week later, Emma stood outside his house.
Sophie slept against her shoulder.
Nathan opened the door.
Emma handed him the diaper bag.
“Your night.”
Nathan blinked.
“You sure?”
“Yes.”
It would be Sophie’s first entire night away from Emma.
Nathan looked terrified.
Emma almost laughed.
“You’ve negotiated with foreign governments.”
“This is worse.”
She smiled.
Nathan stared at that smile.
It was the first one he had received without pain behind it.
Emma kissed Sophie.
Then turned away.
“Emma?”
She stopped.
Nathan held their daughter carefully.
“Thank you for trusting me with her.”
Emma looked at him.
“I’m trying.”
Then she walked home alone.

Halfway there, she realized something unsettling.
For the first time since leaving Manhattan, she missed Nathan before she had even reached her own front door.
