Chapter 18 - THE OFFER

The offer was enormous.

CEO.

Board control.

Equity restored.

Full authority to restructure the company.

Nathan could set his own travel schedule.

Choose his own executive team.

Move part of the headquarters if he wanted.

Emma listened while he explained.

“That sounds different.”

“It is.”

“What are you going to do?”

Nathan looked toward the ocean.

“I don’t know.”

That answer disappointed her.

She hated that it did.

Nathan noticed.

“You wanted me to say no.”

Emma stiffened.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“I want you to make your own decision.”

“I am.”

“But?”

Emma stood.

“I don’t know.”

Nathan followed her outside the bookstore.

Rain had started.

Again.

Newport seemed determined to mark every important conversation with rain.

Emma wrapped her arms around herself.

“I’m scared that you want it.”

Nathan looked at her.

“I do want part of it.”

The honesty hurt.

“What part?”

“The challenge.”

“The scale.”

“The ability to build something huge.”

Emma nodded slowly.

“And what part don’t you want?”

“The worship.”

“The addiction.”

“The excuse.”

Nathan stepped closer but kept distance between them.

“I don’t want to miss Sophie’s life.”

Emma looked down.

“I don’t want to become invisible again.”

“You won’t.”

She looked sharply at him.

Nathan corrected himself.

“If you start feeling invisible, I want you to tell me.”

“And I want to be the kind of man who listens.”

Better.

Always better when he stopped promising outcomes and started promising behavior.

“What if the job changes you again?”

Nathan nodded.

“It might.”

Emma looked hurt.

He continued.

“That’s why I need boundaries too.”

“Not just you.”

“Me.”

“Therapy stays.”

“Travel limits stay.”

“No more pretending every emergency is actually an emergency.”

Emma almost smiled.

Nathan continued.

“And if the company demands the old version of me, I leave.”

Emma stared at him.

“You would really do that?”

“I already did once.”

The next morning, Nathan flew to New York.

Emma did not go.

For two days, she heard nothing except ordinary messages.

Landed.

Meeting starting.

Miss Sophie.

Then silence.

By the third evening, Emma began imagining the old Nathan.

Boardroom.

Applause.

Power.

Phones.

Olivia might be gone.

But the machine that had consumed him remained.

At midnight, Nathan called.

Emma answered immediately.

“What happened?”

A long pause.

Then Nathan said, “I turned it down.”

Emma sat up.

“What?”

“I turned down the CEO position.”

Her heart raced.

“Why?”

“Because I realized something during the meeting.”

“What?”

“They changed the contract.”

“They changed the authority.”

“They changed the schedule.”

Nathan’s voice softened.

“But I had changed what I wanted.”

Emma closed her eyes.

“What do you want?”

“I want to build again.”

Her chest tightened.

“Something smaller.”

“Something I can be proud of without needing it to prove I matter.”

Nathan paused.

“And I want to do it in Oregon.”

Emma’s eyes opened.

“Nathan.”

“Not because I expect you to take me back.”

“I know.”

“I’m not moving into your apartment.”

“I know.”

“I’m not buying the bookstore.”

“That better not even be a joke.”

Nathan laughed.

Emma did too.

Then he became serious.

“I want Sophie to grow up knowing where her father is.”

Emma whispered, “When are you coming home?”

Silence.

Nathan heard the word.

So did Emma.

May you like

Home.

She had said it without thinking.
