Chapter 19 - THE PLACE THEY CHOSE

Nathan returned two days later.

Emma waited at the bookstore.

Sophie was asleep upstairs.

Nathan walked inside.

For several seconds, neither mentioned the word Emma had used on the phone.

Then Nathan placed a folder on the counter.

Emma stared at it suspiciously.

“What did you buy?”

“Nothing.”

“Good.”

“It’s a business plan.”

“That is somehow worse.”

Nathan smiled.

He opened it.

A regional freight-technology company.

Smaller.

West Coast focused.

No private jet.

No worldwide empire.

No headquarters in Manhattan.

Nathan explained everything.

Emma listened.

Then she noticed something.

“There’s no Whitmore in the name.”

“No.”

“Why?”

Nathan shrugged.

“I already built something with my name all over it.”

“I don’t need another monument.”

Emma looked at him carefully.

“What’s it called?”

“North Harbor Logistics.”

She smiled.

“That sounds boring.”

“It is aggressively boring.”

“Good.”

Nathan laughed.

Then Emma saw a second folder.

“What is that?”

He became nervous.

“A lease.”

Her expression changed.

“For what?”

“Office space.”

“Where?”

Nathan pointed down the street.

Emma stared.

“You’re joking.”

“Old cannery building.”

“That place smells like fish.”

“Only the west side.”

Emma laughed.

Nathan watched her.

The laughter faded.

Silence came.

Not uncomfortable.

Just full.

Emma stepped closer.

“Nathan.”

“Yes?”

“I’m scared.”

His smile disappeared.

“Of me?”

“Of believing you.”

Nathan nodded slowly.

“I understand.”

“I loved you when you were terrible at loving me.”

His eyes filled.

“That made leaving almost impossible.”

Emma’s voice shook.

“If I love you again now…”

Nathan waited.

“…and you become that man again…”

She could not finish.

Nathan did not say he never would.

Instead, he took one step closer.

“If I become that man again, leave.”

Emma stared at him.

“No begging.”

“No using Sophie.”

“No money.”

“No promises.”

“If I ever make you disappear inside your own life again, choose yourself.”

Emma began crying.

Nathan did too.

“That’s a terrible romantic speech.”

“I know.”

Emma laughed through tears.

Then she did something neither of them had planned.

She stepped forward.

She wrapped her arms around him.

Nathan froze.

He did not close his arms around her immediately.

Emma felt it.

She whispered, “You can hug me.”

Nathan held her.

Carefully.

Like she was something he had once broken and would never again assume he had the right to possess.

Emma pressed her face against his chest.

His heart was pounding.

“So much for ninety-day boundaries,” she whispered.

Nathan almost laughed.

“I’m not complaining.”

Emma pulled back.

Nathan looked at her.

He did not kiss her.

Emma understood why.

So she made the choice.

She reached up.

And kissed him.

It was not desperate.

Not cinematic.

Not proof that everything was healed.

It was simply hers.

When she stepped back, Nathan had tears running down his face.

Emma smiled.

“You cry more now.”

“I have a lot of catching up to do.”

Upstairs, Sophie started crying.

Emma laughed.

Nathan looked toward the stairs.

“Our boss is awake.”

They went upstairs together.

May you like

And inside the kitchen drawer below them, the Whitmore wedding ring remained inside its box.

For one more night.
