Chapter 12

The Nanny In Handcuffs

Mara Ellis arrived at the police station under guard just after midnight.

She looked nothing like the woman in the old caregiver photograph.

Her hair was gray at the temples.

Her shoulders were rounded from exhaustion.

She clutched a canvas bag against her chest as if it contained the last safe object in her life.

Detective Keane sat across from her.

Victor watched from an adjacent room through one-way glass.

He had agreed not to enter unless Mara asked for him.

Mara began with the daughters.

"Sophie and Sadie were born eight minutes apart," she said.

Keane frowned.

"Why is only Sophie on the birth record?"

Mara looked down.

"Because Helena arranged the private adoption before I left the hospital."

"Without your consent?"

Mara's eyes filled.

"I was nineteen."

"That does not answer my question."

"I signed papers."

"Did you understand them?"

"No."

"Who adopted Sadie?"

"A couple connected to Helena."

"Names?"

Mara gave them.

Keane wrote everything down.

"When did you see Sadie again?"

"Six years ago."

"Around Daniel Vale's divorce?"

Mara nodded.

"Helena found her first."

"Why?"

"Leverage."

The word landed heavily.

Mara rubbed her hands together.

"Sophie knew about Sadie by then."

"They had met secretly."

"Helena used one to control the other."

Keane leaned forward.

"Which daughter was inside Victor's mansion holding the HELP US sign?"

Mara closed her eyes.

"Sophie."

"Which daughter planted a listening device in Blackwood Global's conference room?"

Mara hesitated.

"Probably Sadie."

"Probably?"

"Sadie works for Helena."

Victor felt a chill behind the glass.

Keane's expression stayed neutral.

"Willingly?"

Mara looked at her.

"I do not know anymore."

"Where is Sophie?"

"Helena took her three days ago."

"From where?"

"A rented apartment in Queens."

"Why did you not call police?"

"Because the last time I tried to go to police, Helena sent me a photograph of Sophie asleep."

Mara's voice broke.

"She always knew where we were."

Keane let the silence sit.

"Why did you come in tonight?"

"Because Ethan was hurt."

"You knew the plan involved him."

"I knew Serena wanted Lily gone."

Mara started crying.

"I did not know she would hurt the baby like that."

Keane's tone hardened.

"You installed a hidden camera in his nursery."

"To collect proof."

"You handled bottles for Helena."

"Because she had Sophie."

"You stayed silent while a child was in danger."

Mara lowered her head.

"Yes."

There was no excuse in the word.

Only shame.

Keane asked about the twin who worked for Helena.

Sadie had grown up wealthy under another surname.

Her adoptive parents died in a boating accident when she was seventeen.

Helena appeared soon afterward and told Sadie the truth about her birth family.

According to Mara, Helena paid for Sadie's education and employed her through a network of consulting companies.

Sadie learned digital surveillance, social engineering, and corporate systems work.

She became useful.

Then she became loyal.

"To Helena?" Keane asked.

Mara shook her head.

"To the idea that Helena saved her."

"Did Helena?"

Mara looked through the glass as if she could somehow see Victor.

"Helena does not save people."

"She makes them owe her."

Keane asked about the wedding plan.

Mara opened the canvas bag.

Inside was a stack of photocopied pages.

The green folder.

Not the one police found in Helena's apartment.

A second copy.

"I made copies before she moved the originals," Mara said.

Keane pulled on gloves.

"What is this?"

"The timeline."

Pages were divided by weeks.

SIX WEEKS BEFORE CEREMONY.

FIVE WEEKS.

FOUR.

THREE.

Every stage contained coded notes.

Remove L.

Increase medical narrative.

Create independent witness.

Finalize temporary authority.

Prepare transport.

Victor's skin crawled.

Keane reached a page labeled CEREMONY DAY.

Several lines had been blacked out by hand.

One remained readable.

V MUST BE MEDICALLY NONFUNCTIONAL BEFORE 8:30 P.M.

Another read:

E TO SECONDARY RESIDENCE WITH AUTHORIZED GUARDIAN.

A third read:

PRESS STATEMENT PREPARED.

Victor's hands curled into fists.

They had written his son's removal like a calendar appointment.

Mara leaned toward Keane.

"There is a second plan."

"What second plan?"

"If Victor discovered the first one early."

Keane's eyes narrowed.

"Where is it?"

"Sadie had it."

"What does it do?"

Mara's face drained of color.

"It turns Lily into the threat."

Victor went still.

At almost the same moment, across town, Lily was leaving Ethan's hospital room to get coffee.

Two uniformed officers stepped out of the elevator.

They were not part of Keane's team.

One asked her name.

"Lily Harper?"

She stopped.

"Yes."

"We have a warrant for your arrest."

Lily stared at him.

"For what?"

The officer took out handcuffs.

"Felony theft and unlawful entry."

Lily's coffee slipped from her hand and hit the floor.

"There has to be a mistake."

"Turn around, please."

"My child is in that room."

The officer looked through the glass.

"Your child?"

Lily swallowed.

"The child I care for."

"Ma'am, turn around."

Maria appeared at the end of the corridor.

"What are you doing?"

Lily looked toward Ethan's room.

"Please do not wake him."

The officer secured the cuffs.

Maria's face went white.

"Call Mr. Blackwood."

Lily's voice shook.

"Call him now."

Victor's phone rang while Mara was still describing the contingency plan.

Maria was nearly hysterical.

"They took Lily."

Victor stood so fast his chair struck the wall.

"Who?"

"Police."

"Keane is here with me."

Keane looked up.

Maria continued.

"Two officers."

"They said she stole something and broke into a hotel room."

Victor looked at Keane.

"What is she talking about?"

Keane was already calling dispatch.

Within two minutes, they had the answer.

A neighboring jurisdiction had issued a warrant based on a sworn complaint from Serena.

According to the complaint, Lily had entered Serena's hotel suite the previous evening and stolen a sapphire necklace valued at one hundred and twenty thousand dollars.

Hotel security footage showed a woman who looked exactly like Lily entering the room at 8:43 p.m.

A key-card log showed the same entry.

The necklace was later found in a locker at a bus station.

The locker had been rented using an online account in Lily's name.

Victor stared at Keane.

"She was sitting beside Ethan at 8:43."

"I know."

"You were there."

"I know."

"Then stop them."

"The arrest has already happened."

"Undo it."

Keane's voice sharpened.

"I am working on it."

Victor grabbed his coat.

Mara spoke from the interview room speaker.

"This is it."

Everyone stopped.

"What?" Keane asked.

Mara stared toward the glass.

"The second plan."

"They built it so the first accusation could fail."

Victor entered the interview room despite the agreement.

Mara looked at him with fear.

He did not care.

"Explain."

"If Serena was exposed, Helena would create a new crime after the exposure."

"Something with independent cameras and digital records."

"Something that made Lily look like she was retaliating."

Victor's face hardened.

"Why?"

"Because one fake accusation looks suspicious."

Mara's voice trembled.

"Two different accusations in two different places look like a pattern."

Keane swore softly.

Victor called Caleb.

"Lily was arrested."

"What?"

"Get to the station."

"I am calling criminal counsel now."

"Get her out."

"I will do everything I can."

Victor ended the call.

At the neighboring precinct, Lily sat in a holding room still wearing the clothes she had slept in at the hospital.

She had never been arrested before.

She had never been handcuffed before.

She had never felt more powerless.

A detective placed still images from the hotel footage in front of her.

The woman in them had Lily's face.

Her hair.

Her height.

Her dark coat.

Lily stared.

"That is not me."

"It looks like you."

"I was at the hospital."

"We will verify that."

"You can verify it in five minutes."

The detective did not react.

"Why would Ms. Vale accuse you?"

Lily almost laughed.

"Have you watched the news?"

"Answer the question."

"Because she hurt Ethan and I recorded her."

"She says you staged the recording."

"Of course she does."

"She says you are obsessed with Victor Blackwood."

Lily's face burned.

"That diary was forged."

"What diary?"

Lily realized the detective did not have Keane's full case file yet.

The jurisdictions were moving at different speeds.

That was exactly what Serena's side had counted on.

Confusion.

Fragmentation.

One officer seeing only one piece.

Lily leaned forward.

"Call Detective Nora Keane."

"We have."

"Then call her again."

"Sit back, Ms. Harper."

Lily sat back.

Her hands trembled in her lap.

What frightened her most was not the charge.

It was Ethan waking without her.

At the hospital, he did.

He looked toward the chair beside his bed.

Empty.

He looked toward the door.

"Li-li?"

Maria picked him up carefully.

"She is coming back, sweetheart."

Ethan began to cry.

Victor arrived thirty minutes later and heard him from the corridor.

The sound hit him harder than any headline.

He entered the room.

Ethan reached toward him and then looked past him.

"Li-li."

Victor closed his eyes.

"I know."

He held his son.

"I am going to bring her back."

Caleb succeeded in getting an emergency bail hearing scheduled for the morning.

But the prosecutor in the neighboring county refused to release Lily overnight because the alleged property value was high and the complaint claimed she posed a flight risk.

Victor nearly exploded.

"A flight risk?"

Caleb held up a hand.

"The fake evidence includes her passport information."

"She does not even have her passport."

"I know."

"Then tell them."

"I did."

"And?"

"The judge will hear it in the morning."

Victor turned away.

He had spent his life making one phone call and moving obstacles.

For the first time, he understood the helplessness of a person whose life was trapped inside a process designed to be slow because speed could also be dangerous.

Money could buy lawyers.

It could not safely erase procedure.

Victor hated that truth and respected it at the same time.

At 3:17 a.m., Keane's digital team finished a first review of the hotel footage.

They found no obvious edit.

The woman looked exactly like Lily.

The key-card record was genuine.

The locker account used Lily's real email address.

Then one analyst noticed something small.

In the hotel hallway video, a mirrored wall reflected the woman's left hand.

She wore a thin ring on her index finger.

Lily never wore rings while caring for Ethan because she was afraid of scratching him.

That was not proof.

But it was a crack.

The analyst enlarged the reflection.

The ring had a distinctive black stone.

Keane searched recent images from the Blackwood mansion.

At a charity dinner three weeks earlier, Sadie Hart had been caught in the background disguised as catering staff.

On her left index finger was the same black-stone ring.

Keane stared at the image.

"Get me the hotel raw files."

The analyst nodded.

"And the elevator cameras."

"Already requested."

At 4:02 a.m., a second camera angle arrived.

The woman entered Serena's suite looking like Lily.

Forty seconds later, she emerged from a service stairwell where the camera resolution was better.

Her face shifted as she turned.

Not physically.

Digitally.

For three frames, the face-mapping filter failed.

Under Lily's borrowed face was Sadie Hart.

Keane sent the images to Caleb.

Victor saw them at 4:09.

His relief lasted exactly seven seconds.

Then Keane called again.

"We can clear Lily on the hotel entry."

"Then she comes home."

"Likely in the morning."

"What is wrong?"

Keane hesitated.

"The bus-station locker is a different problem."

"Why?"

"The rental account was opened from Lily's phone."

Victor went still.

"Her phone was with her."

"Was it?"

Victor thought back.

At the hospital, Lily had left her phone charging at the nurses' station for almost an hour because the outlet beside Ethan's bed was broken.

Anyone in the corridor might have reached it.

Keane continued.

"And the locker application used a fingerprint authorization from her device."

Victor stared at his own hand.

"You cannot fake that remotely."

"Not easily."

"Then how?"

Mara, still at the station, overheard the question.

Her face changed.

"Sadie does not need to fake Lily's fingerprint."

Keane looked at her.

"What do you mean?"

Mara whispered.

"Helena collected it weeks ago."

"Collected what?"

"Lily's fingerprint."

Victor felt sick.

"How?"

Mara looked at him.

"From the glass Serena asked Lily to carry at the engagement dinner."

The people targeting Lily had not started planning after Ethan was hurt.

They had been collecting pieces of her identity for weeks.
