Chapter 4

The Bracelet In Lily'S Bag

By eight the next morning, three different versions of the story were already online.

None of them were true.

One headline claimed a Blackwood employee had been accused of stealing jewelry worth eighty thousand dollars.

Another claimed Victor's fiancee had heroically intervened after witnessing a nanny mishandle his child.

A third showed a photograph of Lily leaving the hospital with her face turned away from the cameras.

The caption called her a disgruntled domestic worker.

Victor read the articles in silence at the guesthouse kitchen table.

Then he placed the phone face down.

Caleb sat across from him with a laptop open.

"The leak was fast," Caleb said.

"Too fast."

Victor's voice was flat.

"Someone had prepared it."

Caleb nodded.

"That is what I think."

Lily entered the kitchen carrying Ethan.

The child was sleepy and irritable from the cast, but he brightened when he saw Victor.

Victor stood immediately.

"How is he?"

"He slept in short stretches."

Lily looked exhausted.

"He keeps trying to move the cast and then gets upset."

Victor reached for him.

Ethan leaned toward his father.

Victor held him carefully.

For a few minutes, the legal documents, leaked stories, and security logs disappeared.

Then Lily saw Victor's phone light up on the table.

Her own face appeared beneath a headline.

She froze.

Victor picked up the phone before she could read more.

Too late.

"They are saying I stole from her?"

"Yes."

"And that I hurt Ethan?"

Victor did not answer quickly enough.

Lily's face went pale.

"Oh my God."

"Lily, look at me."

She did.

"The detectives know the pill bottle was staged."

"But the bracelet had my fingerprints."

"Because you fastened it for Serena."

"Can they prove that?"

Victor looked at Caleb.

Caleb answered.

"Maybe."

Lily laughed once, but there was no humor in it.

"Maybe."

She sat down heavily.

"That is the word that ruins people."

Victor felt anger rise in him.

Not at Lily.

At the entire machinery moving around her.

"You are not facing this alone."

Lily looked at him.

"With respect, Mr. Blackwood, I am the nanny in every headline."

"And I am Ethan's father in every statement I make."

"People will say you are protecting yourself."

"Then I will keep talking until they get tired of saying it."

Caleb closed the laptop.

"Both of you need to stop reading the coverage."

Victor looked at him.

"Useful advice from a man who has six news sites open."

"I am paid to suffer."

For the first time since the previous afternoon, Lily almost smiled.

The moment ended when Detective Keane called.

She asked Victor and Lily to come to the main house separately for formal follow-up interviews.

Victor objected to bringing Ethan back.

Keane told him not to.

Maria would stay with the child under outside security.

Lily hesitated.

"I do not want to leave him."

Victor understood.

"Neither do I."

Maria stepped into the kitchen.

"I will not let anyone through that door."

Lily looked at her.

Maria placed a hand over her heart.

"Not anyone."

They left Ethan with her.

At the main residence, police tape sealed Lily's room.

Serena was gone.

Her lawyer had taken her to a hotel the night before.

Graham Holt was still missing.

Helena Vale had denied being at the mansion despite the recovered video.

Keane separated Victor and Lily immediately.

Victor was interviewed in the library.

Lily was taken to the breakfast room.

Moreno asked Lily to walk through every moment before Ethan was injured.

She did.

He asked again.

She repeated it.

He changed the order of the questions.

Her answers stayed the same.

Then he placed a photograph on the table.

The diamond bracelet.

"You said you fastened this for Ms. Vale two nights ago."

"Yes."

"Where?"

"Her dressing room."

"Time?"

"Around seven."

"Anyone else there?"

Lily thought.

"Her stylist had just left."

"Name?"

"Nadia, I think."

Moreno wrote it down.

"Did Serena remove the bracelet later?"

"I do not know."

"Did you enter her bedroom after that?"

"No."

"Did you ever handle her cash?"

"No."

"Her medication?"

"No."

Moreno slid another photograph across the table.

It showed the inside of Lily's suitcase from a different angle.

She stared at it.

"What am I looking at?"

"Look at the lining."

Lily leaned closer.

There was a small tear near the zipper.

"That tear was not there before."

"You are sure?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"I bought that suitcase two months ago."

Moreno nodded.

"We found something under the torn lining."

Lily's stomach tightened.

He placed a small evidence photograph in front of her.

A memory card.

"Have you seen this before?"

"No."

"It was hidden inside your suitcase."

Lily stared at him.

"What is on it?"

"We are still examining it."

"Am I being accused of something?"

Moreno did not answer immediately.

"Right now, we are trying to understand why someone put several objects in your room."

"Several?"

"The bracelet."

"The cash."

"The fake prescription bottle."

He tapped the memory card.

"And this."

Lily felt cold.

"What if the card has something terrible on it?"

Moreno met her eyes.

"Then we determine who created it."

"And if you cannot?"

"Then we keep looking."

Lily lowered her head.

"That does not sound very comforting."

"It is not supposed to be comforting."

His voice softened slightly.

"It is supposed to be fair."

In the library, Keane showed Victor the image of Helena Vale with Graham.

"Her attorney says the timestamp may be wrong."

Victor almost smiled.

"It is not."

"How do you know?"

"Because I arrived at 2:24, and the same recovered cache shows me entering."

Keane nodded.

"We know."

"Then why ask?"

"Because I wanted to hear whether you would overstate what you know."

Victor leaned back.

"Did I pass?"

"So far."

She placed another image in front of him.

A black SUV leaving the estate service road at 2:27.

"This vehicle is registered to a holding company."

"Whose?"

"We do not know yet."

"Was Helena inside?"

"We think so."

"And Holt?"

"Unknown."

Keane studied Victor.

"Did Serena's mother have any reason to access your security system?"

"None."

"Did she know your schedules?"

"Serena did."

"Did Serena know you were coming home early yesterday?"

Victor frowned.

"No."

"Who did?"

"My pilot."

"Anyone else?"

"My assistant, Caleb, and the driver."

Keane nodded.

"Then your early return may have interrupted something."

Victor felt the words settle heavily.

"Something involving Ethan?"

"Maybe."

"What?"

"That is what we are trying to determine."

Victor's phone buzzed.

It was an alert from Blackwood Global's private cyber team.

They had completed a first-pass review of the hidden phone found near the nursery.

Keane noticed his expression.

"What is it?"

"The phone."

"What about it?"

"They found an encrypted messaging application."

Keane stood.

"Do not access anything until our technician is present."

"The device is already with your evidence team."

Victor showed her the notice.

"They are coordinating."

Keane read the summary.

The phone had been wiped twice in the last month.

Most messages were gone.

But notification previews remained in a system cache.

One was dated eleven days earlier.

It read:

CAMERA WINDOW 2:05-2:20. KEEP THE NANNY DOWNSTAIRS.

Another read:

HE STILL REACHES FOR HER FIRST.

A third was more disturbing.

WE NEED A DOCUMENTED INCIDENT BEFORE THE SIGNING.

Keane read it twice.

"Signing?"

Victor thought of the prenuptial agreement scheduled for that morning.

Then he thought of the guardianship amendment Serena's attorney had sent hours before Ethan was hurt.

"The prenup," he said.

Keane's eyes sharpened.

"What is in it?"

Victor explained the new clause.

For the first time, Detective Keane looked openly alarmed.

"Someone wanted an incident involving the child before you signed a document giving Serena temporary authority over him."

Victor's face hardened.

"I did not sign it."

"Because you came home early."

The room went silent.

Victor's pulse pounded.

If his meeting had run on schedule, he would have been gone until midnight.

Lily would have been alone against Serena's accusation.

The camera would have been off.

The bracelet, money, pills, and memory card would have been waiting in Lily's suitcase.

And the next morning, Serena's lawyer would have placed a guardianship clause in front of him while he was frightened, exhausted, and desperate to stabilize his family.

The pattern was no longer subtle.

It was almost elegant.

Victor felt sick.

"What is on the memory card?" he asked.

Keane looked at him.

"What memory card?"

Victor stared back.

A second later, Moreno entered the library.

His face was grim.

"We just opened it."

Keane turned.

"And?"

Moreno placed a laptop on the desk.

"It contains forty-two video files."

Victor's chest tightened.

"Of what?"

Moreno looked at him.

"Your son."

Victor stood so fast the chair struck the wall.

"What kind of videos?"

Moreno hesitated.

"Someone has been recording Ethan inside this house for months."

He clicked one file.

The screen showed the nursery at night.

The angle was low, hidden, and not from any official Blackwood camera.

Ethan slept in his crib.

A timestamp glowed in the corner.

Then a figure entered.

Not Lily.

Not Serena.

A man.

Victor stared at the screen.

The man's face turned toward the hidden camera.

Graham Holt.

He walked to the crib and placed something beneath Ethan's mattress.

Moreno froze the frame.

Victor whispered.

"What is that?"

Keane's answer was quiet.

"We are going to find out."

And suddenly the bracelet in Lily's bag no longer looked like the center of the case.

It looked like camouflage.

The media story about Lily became uglier before it became better.

Anonymous accounts published old photographs from her college years.

A former classmate sold a story saying Lily had always been ambitious.

A gossip site found a photograph of her standing beside a luxury car that did not belong to her and suggested she had expensive tastes.

None of it had anything to do with Ethan.

That was why it worked.

People filled blank spaces with whatever made the story entertaining.

Lily sat in the guesthouse kitchen and read one article despite Caleb's warning.

Victor took the phone from her hand.

"Stop."

She looked up angrily.

"Do not tell me not to read what people are saying about me."

Victor put the phone on the table.

"Fair."

Lily blinked.

She had expected an argument.

Victor sat opposite her.

"Then read it if you need to."

"But do not mistake repetition for evidence."

Lily stared at the headline.

"It is easy for you to say."

"My name protects me."

"Yours makes people curious about every mistake."

"Mine makes people assume I must have made one."

Victor nodded.

"That is also fair."

Lily looked at him more carefully.

"You are agreeing with me a lot today."

"I am trying a new strategy called listening."

Despite herself, Lily laughed.

Then her expression became serious.

"If they keep saying I wanted your money, people will believe it."

"Some will."

"If they keep saying I wanted you, people will believe that too."

Victor's jaw tightened.

"That part was designed to make every concern you raised look emotionally motivated."

Lily nodded.

"Exactly."

"So if I said Serena frightened Ethan, I was jealous."

"If I said she threatened me, I was jealous."

"If I stayed near him, I was possessive."

Victor looked at the floor.

"She created a story that explained away every warning before you gave it."

Lily whispered.

"That is why I felt trapped."

Victor finally understood the elegance of the frame.

Serena had not merely planned fake evidence.

She had planned an interpretation for Lily's truth.
