Chapter 15

The Wedding Rehearsal

By sunrise, Victor's canceled wedding had become the most dangerous event on his calendar.

There was no ceremony scheduled for the next day.

No rehearsal.

No reception.

No reason for Serena's suitcase to contain an invitation marked with tomorrow's date.

Detective Keane assumed it was a code until Sophie corrected her.

"Helena uses real events as covers," Sophie said.

"If the original event disappears, she builds a smaller version somewhere else."

Victor frowned.

"A fake wedding?"

"Not fake."

Sophie looked at him.

"A private legal ceremony would be enough for some of the documents."

Caleb immediately shook his head.

"Victor would have to appear and consent."

"Unless the point is not to complete the marriage," Keane said.

Everyone looked at her.

"Unless the point is to make it look like Victor intended to marry Serena right up until a medical crisis."

Victor understood.

A private rehearsal.

A small gathering.

Photographs.

Witnesses.

Then a sudden collapse.

Serena could tell the world the wedding had been imminent and the couple reconciled.

It would complicate every accusation and make her look like the devoted fiancee beside an incapacitated man.

"Where?" Victor asked.

Sophie shook her head.

"I do not know."

Mara did.

She remembered Helena mentioning a private chapel owned by a charitable foundation outside the city.

Blackwood investigators found the property within an hour.

The chapel was booked that evening under a shell company tied to Randall Pierce.

Victor looked at Keane.

"There it is."

Keane did not smile.

"Maybe."

"You still say maybe?"

"Until I walk in and see Helena holding a sign that says CRIME MEETING, yes."

Victor rubbed his face.

"What do you want to do?"

Keane answered.

"Nothing visible."

"We watch the chapel."

"We identify everyone who arrives."

"We do not warn them that Sophie is safe."

Victor looked at Sophie.

"Can Helena tell you are with police?"

"My phone is gone."

"Then she may still think you are in room 814."

Sophie nodded.

Keane looked at Victor.

"And you do not go anywhere near the chapel."

Victor almost laughed.

"Why would I?"

His phone rang.

Unknown number.

Everyone in the room froze.

Keane motioned for him to answer on speaker.

Victor did.

"Hello?"

Serena's voice filled the room.

"I was wondering when you would stop hiding behind detectives."

Victor felt anger move through him.

"Where are you?"

"You know where I am not."

"My house."

Serena laughed softly.

"Still dramatic."

Victor looked at Keane.

She was tracing the call.

"What do you want?"

"To talk."

"You have a lawyer."

"So do you."

"Then talk through them."

Serena was silent.

Then she changed tone.

"How is Ethan?"

Victor's face went cold.

"Do not say his name."

"I care about him."

"You fractured his arm."

"That is what Lily says."

"That is what your own voice says."

"A recording can capture a moment without context."

Victor almost admired the shamelessness.

"Was the context that he was fourteen months old instead of fifteen?"

Serena's voice sharpened.

"You think this is simple because you need it to be simple."

"No."

Victor looked at Sophie.

"I think it is complicated because your mother spent years making it complicated."

Silence.

Serena had not expected that.

"Leave my mother out of this."

"Beth Carver did not."

Another silence.

"Mara did not either."

Serena inhaled.

Victor continued.

"Sophie is safe."

Keane's head snapped toward him.

That had not been the plan.

Victor knew it.

He said it anyway.

Serena went completely silent.

Then she whispered.

"You found her."

"Yes."

"Is my mother with her?"

Victor frowned.

The question sounded genuine.

"No."

Serena exhaled shakily.

For the first time, Victor heard fear that did not sound performed.

"Victor, listen to me."

"I am listening."

"My mother is going to do something reckless."

Keane wrote a note and held it up.

KEEP HER TALKING.

Victor leaned against the table.

"She already has."

"You do not understand."

"Then explain it."

Serena lowered her voice.

"She knows the trust is locked."

Victor looked at Caleb.

"How?"

"She has people."

"Who?"

"I do not know all of them."

"Convenient."

"I am serious."

Serena sounded angry now.

"She built this before me."

"You were part of it."

"Yes."

The admission stopped everyone.

Victor stared at the phone.

"Say that again."

Serena laughed bitterly.

"Do not pretend you did not hear me."

"You were part of the plan?"

"Yes."

Keane's eyes sharpened.

The call was being recorded.

Victor asked the question carefully.

"The plan to take control if I became incapacitated?"

Serena paused.

"The financial plan."

"Not Ethan."

Victor's hands clenched.

"You hurt him."

"I lost my temper."

"He is a baby."

"I know."

"You fractured his arm."

Serena began crying.

Victor felt nothing.

"I did not mean to."

"You threatened Lily while he screamed."

"Because she was going to ruin everything."

The room became utterly still.

Serena realized what she had said.

Too late.

Victor's voice was quiet.

"Everything."

Serena stopped crying.

"You wanted her gone before the guardianship signing."

"Victor..."

"Answer me."

"Yes."

Keane closed her eyes briefly.

There it was.

Not the entire case.

But a direct admission connecting Lily's removal to the plan.

Victor continued.

"Why call me now?"

Serena's voice changed again.

"Because Helena has Sadie."

Sophie stood.

Mara made a small sound.

"What do you mean?" Victor asked.

"Sadie tried to leave after the hotel footage failed."

"My mother took her."

"Where?"

"The chapel."

Keane immediately motioned to her team.

Victor looked at Sophie.

She was shaking.

"Why the chapel?"

"Because Helena thinks she can still salvage the story."

"How?"

"She wants me there."

"She wants you to come," Serena said.

Victor's eyes narrowed.

"Why?"

"Because she thinks if you meet me privately, she can photograph us."

"Then what?"

"Then she creates evidence that we reconciled."

"And if I refuse?"

Serena was silent.

Victor felt the answer before she gave it.

"She hurts Sadie?"

"She says she will turn Sadie over to people who will make sure she never talks."

Mara started crying.

Sophie gripped her mother's hand.

Keane held up another note.

DO NOT AGREE TO GO.

Victor read it.

Then he looked at Sophie.

Her sister was being used the way Ethan had been used.

A vulnerable person as leverage.

He had spent forty-eight hours learning exactly how Helena worked.

If he simply refused, Helena would move to another contingency.

If he went alone, he would be walking into a trap.

Victor spoke slowly.

"Tell your mother I will meet you."

Keane's face darkened.

Serena exhaled.

"Victor..."

"At the chapel."

"Come alone."

"No."

"Then she will know."

"I will come without visible security."

Keane mouthed a word Victor chose not to repeat.

Serena lowered her voice.

"Seven o'clock."

"Fine."

"Wear the suit from the rehearsal fitting."

Victor almost laughed.

"Why?"

"Because Helena wants the photographs to look believable."

"Of course she does."

The call ended.

Keane turned on Victor.

"What part of do not go did you misunderstand?"

"The part where Sadie is in that chapel."

"My team can extract her."

"Then do it."

"We will."

"And I can keep Helena focused on me while you do."

Keane stared at him.

"You are not trained for this."

"Neither is Sadie."

Caleb stepped between them verbally before the argument exploded.

"Can we use Victor without actually using Victor?"

Keane frowned.

"Meaning?"

"Controlled arrival."

"Body armor."

"Police inside and outside."

"No unsupervised contact."

Keane looked furious that the idea was not completely stupid.

"I hate all of you."

Victor nodded.

"Good."

At 6:52 p.m., Victor arrived at the chapel in the dark navy suit Serena had once chosen for their wedding rehearsal dinner.

The symbolism made him feel sick.

Hidden officers were positioned throughout the grounds.

A tiny microphone sat beneath his collar.

Keane's voice came through an earpiece.

"If I say out, you leave."

Victor walked toward the doors.

"Understood."

"Do not improvise."

Victor did not answer.

"Victor."

"Understood."

The chapel doors opened.

Serena stood alone near the altar wearing a white dress.

Not a wedding gown.

Close enough for a photograph.

Victor stopped halfway down the aisle.

"Where is Sadie?"

Serena looked toward the side door.

"With my mother."

"Where?"

"Close."

Victor's jaw tightened.

"You admitted you were part of the plan on the phone."

Serena gave a bitter smile.

"I assumed you were recording."

"And you still admitted it."

"Because I need you to understand Helena."

"I understand her well enough."

Serena stepped closer.

"No, you understand what she does to targets."

"You do not understand what she does to family."

Victor looked at her.

For a moment, Serena seemed almost young.

Almost frightened.

Then he remembered Ethan's cast.

"Do not ask me to pity you."

"I am not."

"Good."

"I am asking you to survive her."

A camera shutter clicked somewhere in the chapel.

Victor heard it.

Serena heard it too.

"There," she whispered.

"She has the picture."

Keane's voice sounded in Victor's ear.

"We have movement in the east room."

Victor kept his face still.

Serena glanced past him.

"You brought police."

"Of course I did."

Her face tightened.

"Then Sadie is in danger."

A scream came from behind the side door.

Sophie, listening from the command vehicle, shouted her sister's name.

Keane's voice snapped through Victor's earpiece.

"Out. Now."

Victor moved toward the side door instead.

"Victor, out!"

He reached the corridor as officers rushed from the opposite end.

A chair crashed.

A woman ran through a rear exit.

Police followed.

Inside a small preparation room, Sadie sat against the wall, crying, alive and unhurt.

Her wrists were bound with ribbon from a wedding decoration.

Serena entered behind Victor and stopped.

"Sadie."

The young woman looked at her with hatred.

"You knew."

Serena went pale.

"Knew what?"

"You knew what she did to Sophie."

"You knew what she did to Mom."

"And you still helped her."

Serena opened her mouth.

Sadie screamed.

"You still helped her!"

Officers separated them.

Keane entered moments later.

"Helena escaped through the rear service road."

Victor's face hardened.

"How?"

"A vehicle was waiting."

"Whose?"

Keane looked at Serena.

"Registered to Randall Pierce's law firm."

Serena closed her eyes.

Then a police radio crackled.

An officer had stopped the vehicle two miles away.

Victor exhaled.

The relief lasted one second.

The next transmission came through.

The driver was Randall Pierce.

Helena was not in the car.

The back seat was empty.

Pierce had been the decoy.

And Helena had disappeared again.

The chapel operation produced one unexpected piece of evidence before everyone left.

A photographer hired through the shell company surrendered his memory cards.

He had been told he was documenting a private reconciliation for a celebrity couple.

He knew nothing about Sadie.

He knew nothing about the criminal investigation.

His instructions were highly specific.

Capture Victor entering alone.

Capture Serena near the altar.

Capture any physical proximity that could suggest affection.

Avoid police if visible.

Do not photograph side rooms.

Victor read the instruction sheet.

"They were manufacturing a memory."

Keane nodded.

"A public one."

One photograph showed Serena stepping close to Victor just before the scream from the side room.

From the angle, she appeared to be touching his chest intimately.

In reality, she had been whispering that Helena had the picture she wanted.

Without audio, the photograph told the opposite story.

Lily studied it later.

"This is what they did to me."

Victor looked at her.

"Take something real and change the frame around it."

"Yes."

Lily returned the photograph.

"That may be the whole case in one picture."

Victor understood.

Facts did not always disappear when people lied.

Sometimes the facts remained exactly where they were while someone changed what the viewer was told they meant.
