Chapter 13 - What Claire Had Planned

The balcony floor stopped moving when the hotel’s emergency power failed.

Marco had broken through the freight lift and disabled the ballroom control system.

The crib remained less than two feet from the railing.

Victor pulled Ethan into his arms.

Lily collapsed beside them.

Serena tried to escape through the gallery.

Mercer intercepted her near the service door.

For the first time, Serena was placed in handcuffs.

She did not resist.

She looked past Mercer toward Victor.

“You will come back to me when you learn what Claire did.”

Victor ignored her.

Dr. Moreno examined Ethan inside an ambulance.

The sedative dosage was dangerous but not fatal.

His fracture remained aligned despite the cast being removed.

Lily sat near the ambulance doors while a medic checked her ribs.

Claire arrived under federal escort.

Lily watched her approach.

Serena’s accusation remained inside her mind.

Claire had known about the nanny application.

Claire had known Ethan was her biological child.

Claire had allowed Lily to enter the Blackwood mansion without warning her.

“Did you submit my application?” Lily asked.

Claire stopped.

Victor looked toward her.

Claire’s silence answered first.

“Yes.”

Lily felt as though she had been struck.

“Why?”

“I needed someone near Ethan.”

“You could have told me.”

“I was being watched.”

“You could have sent one sentence.”

“If anyone discovered you knew, they would have taken you too.”

“So you used me without my knowledge.”

Claire’s eyes filled.

“I trusted you to protect him.”

“You let me believe I found the job by chance.”

“I am sorry.”

“That does not explain Charles’s signature.”

Claire looked toward the hotel.

“He agreed to give me temporary control if Victor was removed.”

Victor’s expression hardened.

“When?”

“Before Ethan was born.”

Charles was carried from the ballroom on a stretcher.

He remained conscious.

Victor approached him.

“Did you sign a transfer naming Claire?”

Charles looked at the document recovered from Peter.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Amelia asked me to.”

“Without telling me.”

“She feared Julian would use the surrogacy to challenge Ethan’s identity.”

“So you gave Claire control of the trust.”

“Only if you died or became incapacitated.”

Victor’s anger sharpened.

“Serena found the document.”

Charles nodded.

“She altered the activation clause.”

“The version Peter carried could be triggered immediately.”

Naomi examined the pages.

“The signature is real.”

“The altered clause was inserted later.”

“Peter escaped with a copy, but we have this original version.”

Victor looked at Claire.

“Did you plan to take Ethan?”

“No.”

“Serena said your application was part of the plan.”

“I wanted Lily inside the house because I believed Serena would enter your life.”

“How could you know?”

“Serena visited the clinic where they held me.”

“She spoke about becoming Amelia’s replacement.”

“Amelia was still alive then.”

Victor’s face changed.

Claire continued.

“Julian planned Serena’s introduction before the accident.”

“He knew you would need someone who appeared patient and charitable.”

“They studied you.”

“Your grief.”

“Your travel schedule.”

“Your fear of raising Ethan alone.”

Lily felt disgust.

The engagement had been built like a business operation.

Claire looked at her sister.

“I sent your application because I believed Serena would choose someone she could discredit.”

“Your nursing record made you vulnerable.”

“Your connection to me made you useful.”

“She believed she could watch you.”

“I believed you would watch Ethan.”

Lily’s voice broke.

“You gambled with my life.”

“Yes.”

Claire did not defend herself.

“I did.”

“And I would do it differently if I could.”

“But Ethan is alive because you were there.”

Lily looked toward the ambulance.

That truth did not erase the betrayal.

It made it harder.

Mercer approached.

“Serena wants to make a statement.”

“Her lawyer is present.”

“She says she will identify Julian’s location in exchange for protective custody.”

Victor laughed without humor.

“She is negotiating before the handcuffs cool.”

“She also claims Peter has the medical file required for Julian’s transplant.”

“Would he still attempt the procedure?” Lily asked.

Claire nodded.

“His condition is worsening.”

“The treatments stopped working months ago.”

“He believes Ethan’s marrow offers the strongest match.”

“What about Sophie?”

“She is also compatible.”

Victor looked toward Serena inside the police vehicle.

“She intends to trade Julian for herself.”

Mercer nodded.

“She may also send us into another trap.”

Serena’s statement lasted forty minutes.

She admitted that Julian was her biological father.

She admitted helping him falsify financial records.

She denied intending to kill Ethan.

She claimed the sedatives were meant to protect him from stressful procedures.

She described the broken arm as Peter’s plan.

The recorder contradicted her.

She blamed panic.

Then she provided an address.

Julian had a private medical facility beneath an abandoned monastery in Wisconsin.

Peter was transporting equipment there.

The transplant would occur within seventy-two hours.

Victor demanded immediate action.

Mercer requested federal warrants.

The monastery sat across state lines.

The legal process slowed everything.

Naomi worked to prevent Julian from accessing Blackwood funds.

Charles called an emergency board meeting.

Three directors refused to attend.

Two had disappeared.

One was found dead inside his apartment from an apparent overdose.

The conspiracy was collapsing.

The people involved had begun removing one another.

Lily remained near Ethan.

She did not speak to Claire for several hours.

Sophie sensed the distance.

She moved between them, holding each woman’s hand.

Claire finally sat across from Lily.

“I did not know Serena would hurt him physically.”

“You knew she was dangerous.”

“Yes.”

“You still placed me there.”

“I had no one else.”

“You had me.”

Lily’s voice softened with pain.

“You could have trusted me.”

Claire looked down.

“I stopped believing trust was safe.”

“That is what they wanted.”

Claire began crying.

“I know.”

Lily did not forgive her immediately.

She did not walk away either.

They sat in silence while Sophie slept between them.

Victor entered after midnight.

He looked exhausted.

“Ethan is asking for you.”

Lily followed him.

The boy rested inside a secure room.

His arm had been placed in a new cast.

He reached toward Lily.

She sat beside him.

Victor remained near the bed.

“Claire told me Amelia chose you before she died,” he said.

Lily looked at him.

“What?”

“Amelia knew Claire might disappear.”

“She asked Claire who could protect Ethan without caring about the Blackwood name.”

“Claire gave her your name.”

Lily touched Ethan’s small hand.

“I never met Amelia.”

“She knew about you.”

Victor took a folded page from his pocket.

It had been hidden inside the chapel box beneath the diary.

Amelia had written it to Lily.

The letter contained only a few lines.

Claire says you run toward people when everyone else runs away.

I hope you never need to protect my son.

If you do, trust what he shows you before you trust what any Blackwood tells you.

Lily read the letter twice.

Victor looked toward Ethan.

“My wife expected danger.”

“She also expected me to miss it.”

“She knew you loved him.”

“She knew I loved him badly.”

Lily shook her head.

“You were absent.”

“That is not the same as not loving him.”

“It felt the same to him.”

Victor accepted the words.

“I know.”

His phone rang.

Marco had found the vehicle Peter used after leaving the hotel.

It had been abandoned near the state line.

Inside, officers found medical equipment and blood samples taken from Ethan.

They also found a phone.

The last outgoing call had been made to the Wisconsin monastery.

Mercer traced the receiving device.

It was not in Wisconsin.

It was moving through downtown Chicago.

Julian had never left the city.

The monastery was a diversion.

The signal stopped beneath Blackwood Tower.

Victor looked through the hospital window at the building bearing his name.

His corporate headquarters contained forty-eight floors, six underground levels, and a private medical suite built for Charles’s heart treatment.

Julian had been preparing the transplant beneath Victor’s own office.

An emergency alert appeared on every screen.

Blackwood Tower had been sealed.

More than three hundred employees remained inside.

Julian appeared on the company’s internal broadcast.

He sat behind Victor’s desk.

Peter Lang stood beside him.

“Victor,” Julian said.

“Bring Ethan home.”

“Or I begin removing everyone who helped you keep him from me.”

Behind Julian, the camera shifted.

Naomi Price sat bound to a chair.

A second chair held Thomas Carter.

May you like

Julian smiled.

“You have one hour.”
